Role
Who you are
- We are looking for someone who is passionate about applying ML to deliver customer impact and has the domain expertise and vision to serve as a technical leader on the team for Graph ML research and development
- You have a Ph.D. degree in a quantitative field (e.g., computer science, industrial engineering, applied math, statistics) and 5+ years of industry experience, or a M.S. degree in related fields and 8+ years of industry experience on ML applications
- You have focused experience building and productionizing graph ML models at scale for industry applications
- You have research and development experience successfully adopting SOTA ML technologies to deliver measurable business value
- Experience deploying, debugging, and fine-tuning machine learning models in large-scale production systems in public clouds, with experience in Infrastructure as Code
- You are comfortable with using GIT, Linux environments, dockers, and other tools for writing robust, production-ready code
- Google Cloud Platform (GCP) experience is a plus
What the job involves
- Etsy is hiring a Staff Machine Learning Engineer II, Risk to join the Risk Engineering organization
- Our team keeps Etsy a safe and trusted marketplace by building advanced and scalable ML technologies to detect and prevent risk and fraud
- This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, Risk ML
- As a member of the product team, this role is an exciting opportunity to collaborate with experienced ML professionals on large-scale projects protecting millions of users
- Build large-scale graphs of users/listings/transactions, and develop and deploy state-of-the-art graph models for risk/fraud mitigation
- Build unsupervised/semi-supervised anomaly detection models to identify emerging patterns with high precision
- Implement and compare supervised learning models (GBDT and DNNs), or ensembles of models, to improve key metrics, often with multiple competing objectives
- Solve customer and business problems (protecting against seller fraud, transactional fraud, account takeover, fake accounts, etc.) using machine learning techniques like graph ML, deep neural networks, and anomaly detection
- Take ideas and scale them to millions to users. Develop and implement end-to-end plans, including idea generation, project planning, model development, production model serving, and ownership of model performance
- Architect new and improve on existing ML systems, including building data architectures (e.g. large-scale graph data processing and storage), enabling faster and more robust model development, and improving model serving and orchestration
- Provide technical leadership on long-term strategy, roadmap, ML design, and system architecture
- Help to coach and mentor more junior team members
- Collaborate with team members and cross-team partners for problem identification, technical design/delivery, and product operationalization
- Share impactful and innovative work in the wider ML research community, including presenting at top-tier ML conferences such as: KDD, ICML, NeurIPS, etc

Our take
Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art, and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.
Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.
However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. The recent hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers has created significant discontent amongst sellers. Etsy must reconcile these issues to ensure artists continue to operate on the same scale within the platform. It plans to attract shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
