Who you are
- Be excited about tackling the urgent issue of climate change through supporting a high-growth business leading the energy transition; experience in energy would be an advantage but not essential, but a strong desire to learn about the sector today and where it’s going tomorrow is a must
- Be able to present complex information in simple ways
- Experience in building Excel-based financial models and Powerpoint-based executive packs
- Be ready to roll up both sleeves and get stuck into complex modelling but also talk 'big picture' with senior stakeholders that you interact with
- Be fast-paced in approach but understand that change in organisation requires engaging with people in different ways
- Be curious and open minded
- An understanding in business finance and accounting but not necessarily ACA or CIMA qualified if you have the right experience
- Previous experience in investment banking, consulting or corporate finance - including the preparation of board/steerco-level materials, due diligence for M&A transactions - would be an advantage but not essential
- Language skills (French, Spanish, German) would be an advantage but not essential
What the job involves
- We are looking for a Strategic Finance Business Partner to join our Strategic Finance team at Octopus Energy and support our International Energy Supply businesses
- You will be managing financial performance, engaging in planning & analysis and bringing alive insight around the actual and expected results of our energy supply businesses
- You'll support & guide leadership teams and colleagues in the business units and be actively involved in acquisitions of customer books or supply business entities as opportunities arise
- You will work closely with both business unit leadership teams, Group Reporting, and the Group CFO
- Lead the preparation of budgets and month-end reporting, ensuring effective collaboration and alignment with Finance teams across business units
- Collaborate with Finance teams to accurately forecast cash flow and plan short-to-medium-term funding requirements
- Drive continuous improvement of financial analysis and reporting tools and process through best practice sharing and knowledge exchange across Finance teams
- Identify and manage economic trade-offs across the business (growth, returns, cash), including evaluating impact of new lines of business (products, services) and other investments made by Octopus Energy Group
- Monitor actual performance vs plan, including diagnostic and action plan if needed (working together with the business)
- Contribute to the preparation of month-end reporting packs, board packs and other strategic meeting material for Octopus Energy Group
- Engage with the Group CFO, broader senior management team and investors regularly across a number of areas
- Support strategic M&A/fundraising/capital structure activity within the group
- Work on financial planning and analysis across the Energy Supply segment of a very complex business - owning, developing and validating the both near-term and long-term (5+ year) business models and other key business tools

According to Octopus, the energy industry in the UK is ruled by a handful of complacent companies peddling fossil fuels, pricing trickery, and poor customer service. Aiming to disrupt the status quo with sustainable energy, Octopus entered the market in 2016 and they now supply energy to millions of homes in a number of countries. Octopus has made a name for itself in energy circles largely because of its “Kraken” technology platform, which it claims is able to reroute energy from renewable sources around a network far more efficiently than competitors.
Octopus Energy further differentiates itself through its aspiration to make everything as easy as possible for consumers, from the simplicity of their bills and the fact that customers are not locked into a contract so they can leave at any time to offering customer service over email and social media at times that suit customers. They aim to make the eco‐friendly choice the easy choice, so all of their tariffs use 100% green electricity, while not being more expensive than their competitors' non-green tariffs.
They are continually creating innovative new products. For example, Octopus Tracker where prices changes daily to guarantee you get the market rate; Agile where the price changes every half hour to enable you to benefit from cheap electricity when the sun shines, the wind blows, and the networks are under-utilised. One of the current challenges they face is that their products are more complex than their competitors, given they use 1000x more data than traditional energy companies. They're exploring ways to explain to customers exactly how their products work.
