Who you are
- You are a design leader who combines craft with strategy, intuition with evidence, and creativity with empathy. You thrive in collaborative environments and are passionate about creating tools that empower people to be their most creative selves
- 10+ years of experience in product design, with a portfolio demonstrating thoughtful UX, systems thinking, and measurable impact at scale
- 4+ years leading design teams, mentoring managers and senior designers with clarity, empathy, and care
- Experience in marketplaces, e-commerce, or large-scale consumer products, guiding teams through complexity with confidence and collaboration
- Deep expertise in human-centered design, design systems, and cross-functional teamwork
- A proven track record of defining and executing strategic design direction that balances user needs, business goals, and long-term vision
- Strong communication and storytelling skills, inspiring action and alignment through clarity, creativity, and a belief in design’s ability to make a positive difference
What the job involves
- As the Product Design Director for Inventory, you’ll lead the team to address a critical and complex marketplace challenge: helping sellers easily and effectively list their items on Etsy in a way that meets multiple marketplace needs — ensuring that buyers can easily evaluate if an item is right for them, expressing and affirming Etsy's brand, powering search and recommendations algorithms with critical data, and more
- This is a full-time position reporting to the Sr. Director of Product Design, Seller Experience
- Lead with vision: Shape and communicate a clear, inspiring design direction for Listings and Inventory, ensuring your team’s work aligns with Etsy’s goals
- Grow and support your team: Mentor managers and senior designers with empathy and clarity, fostering inclusive, equitable, and people-first leadership
- Champion design quality: Partner with Brand and Design Systems to ensure experiences are consistent, intuitive, and delightful for every seller and buyer
- Collaborate strategically: Work closely with Product, Engineering, and Research leaders to set priorities, align on strategy, and create shared purpose
- Drive impact: Use insights to improve seller satisfaction, listing clarity, and buyer confidence — making every interaction smoother, easier, and more inspiring

Our take
Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.
Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.
However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. A hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers created significant discontent amongst sellers. Despite this, Etsy continues to connect artists and consumers, attracting shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
