- Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or equivalent work experience
- 5+ years of Software Development or Systems experience, including hands-on development work and object-oriented design
- 3+ years of proven track record of high-scale hiring and talent management on teams of multiple disciplines/job families
- Systems engineering experience (e.g., virtualization, hardware design, operating system tuning), experience building scalable infrastructure software or distributed systems
- Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent
- Strong engineering fundamentals (networking, network services, operating systems)
- Leading development life cycle processes and best practices, especially in the areas of deployment automation and monitoring
- Strong program and product management skills
- Experience with distributed systems at scale, including AWS platforms, services and design patterns
What the job involves
- AWS is set to introduce the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC), marking a significant development in utility computing (UC)
- To spearhead this initiative, we are actively seeking an experienced systems development engineering manager with a strong background in automation and operations
- As part of the AWS Managed Operations team, you will play a pivotal role in building and leading operations and development teams dedicated to delivering high-availability AWS services, including EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, and Bedrock, exclusively for EU customers
- As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS
- Within AWS UC, Managed Operations engineers engage with AWS customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services
- Lead your team in executing organizational and team roadmaps, focusing on automation goals
- Regular check-ins and strategic guidance to foster collaboration and shared success
- Analyse systems and software performance, identifying areas for improvement and shape strategies to enhance overall efficiency
- Cross-departmental collaboration is key, you will strengthen relationships with other teams, streamlining processes for optimal team functioning
- Building coaching and mentoring teams to ensure a skilled and invested workforce
- Regularly review key performance metrics, to ensure the team's efforts align with overarching business objectives, fostering a results-driven environment
- Identifying successes and areas for improvement, ensuring your teams are well-prepared for launch challenges and opportunities
- This position may involve On-call responsibility, you will be required to drive escalation calls
- Your responsibilities will focus on transforming how AWS operates its global infrastructure
- You will design and implement systemic solutions that fundamentally reduce operational complexity and cost across AWS regions
- Your work will involve creating scalable automation systems that eliminate operational toil and standardize workflows

Amazon is the world's largest online retailer, and is well-known for its disruption of well-established industries. The company is present in numerous verticals, including cloud computing with Amazon Web Services, AI with its range of Alexa devices and a global marketplace more commonly referred to as 'the everything store'. Acquisitions include Ring, Twitch, Whole Foods Market, and IMDb.
More recently, Amazon has been focused on leading the "third wave in digital advertising". Many businesses are now shifting ad dollars to retailers, which before would have been spent with online media platforms. Amazon's seen great success in the space, with its revenue from advertising now higher than its Amazon Prime membership scheme, audiobooks and digital music combined. This growth is particularly impressive considering its digital ad rivals (like Snap, Alphabet, and Meta) have suffered declines due to wider macroeconomic factors and Apple's iOS privacy changes.
Despite its dominant market position, Amazon will continue to be challenged over the next decade, including sustaining AWS's cloud dominance in the face of Google and Microsoft. On top of this, the company's e-commerce division is facing profitability problems despite its 2023 post-IPO debt funding of 8 billion. It will need to find new ways to stay above their competitors.
