Alongside countless other industries, travel and leisure are swiftly moving digital, with an array of providers dealing in flights, hotels, and experiences entirely online. One such provider is lastminute.com, launched in 1998, that supplies a marketplace for booking all types of trips from luxury holidays to theatre breaks.
Lastminute.com is among the global leaders in online travel. The company was built on a speciality of delivering last minute holiday deals to consumers and, although it now deals much like other providers, it still hosts both late bookings offers and flash sales. Rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach, lastminute uses Dynamic Packaging technology to allow customers to build personal holiday packages. Atop its website and app for searching and booking, it provides a range of other services including payment plans, insurance, and flexible cancellation.
The company has had a difficult time recently due to fuel prices and a poor global economy. This has not been helped by a fraud probe due to mishandling of subsidies from the Swiss government which led to a large fine and prison sentences for some of the company's senior executives. However the company has settled the issue and replaced its leadership team, and is shifting its strategy to better align with the changing preferences among holidaymakers.
