Role
Who you are
- The ideal candidate will be experienced working within a kanban development team, writing well-tested, maintainable and clean code and collaborating day to day with stakeholders on our product and operations teams
- Can balance detail-oriented tasks with long term strategy and scale initiatives
- Prioritize sustainable development, meaning that you can deliver value quickly but not at the expense of code sustainability
- Work strategically to avoid tech debt and are constantly looking for the better way
- 2+ years of experience as a Software Engineer
- Demonstrated experience building out REST APIs in Python or another language
- Experience working with a RDBMS like PostgreSQL
- Ability to collaborate while working on a team and find the best solutions
- Understanding of git
Desirable
- Experience working at a company founded in the past 5-10 years
- Experience writing unit and automated acceptance tests
- Experience with UI technologies such as React. Our team works on internal and external facing UIs, and, while we don’t expect frontend experience with this role, it’s a plus!
- Experience provisioning AWS cloud services using Terraform
- Building pipelines in Jenkins or another CI tool
What the job involves
- Vestwell’s payroll integrations engineering team is seeking a Software Engineer with demonstrated experience creating and consuming REST APIs using Python or other object-oriented languages to enable communication between Vestwell’s systems and those of our partners
- Create and maintain software enabling internal and external API integrations using Python
- Follow best practices in code to build maintainable, low-complexity software which adheres to common programming principles
- Work with stakeholders including our Product and Operations teams to support their product development needs
- Review requirements and translate into an executable development plan, breaking down projects to enable iterative and agile implementation
- Provide production support. We do not have after-hours on-call support, but do support our products during business hours with a rotating schedule
Our take
The current landscape of 401(k) retirement plans is stagnant in comparison to the standards of financial software innovation. Vestwell offers a digital record-keeping platform that works directly with wealth management firms to help workplaces save money on their employee retirement plans. Vestwell does this by removing the friction points financial advisors and companies have in establishing and maintaining defined contribution and benefit programs.
The startup faces competition from legacy players such as Boston-based Fidelity Investments who currently keep track of almost $2 trillion in assets in the industry. Furthermore, Empower also focuses on advisor-friendly and customized web tools and functionality, presenting further competition to Vestwell.
Despite this, Vestwell is uniquely positioned to disrupt the stagnant 401(k) system, a stance only strengthened by its substantial rounds of funding through the 2020s. This has been invested into expanding platform functionality and servicing for its partners and clients, releasing two new products in September 2022 - Vestwell Flex and a TPA portal. These additions will make Third Party Administration partnerships more efficient for Vestwell customers, streamlining the recordkeeping systems necessary for such actions. Continued product updates like these will help Vestwell keep pace with its substantial competition.
