Role
Who you are
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, advanced degree is a plus
- 5-8+ years opto-mechanical design experience
- Hands on experience with optics and opto-mechanical best practices
- Experience with SolidWorks, PDM, or equivalent design and data management software
- Experience with FEA (meshing, modal analysis, thermal analysis, etc.) and corresponding first order analysis
- Understanding of material science related to adhesives in an optical environment
- DFMA, tolerancing, drawings to ASME Y14.5M and ISO 10110
- Strong knowledge of first order optics and aberration theory
- Design of precision mechanisms and kinematic systems
- Experience mentoring junior engineers and leading technical reviews
- Proven track record of owning complex technical projects
- Ability to work effectively in an open, collaborative environment
- Excellent communication, listening, and people skills
What the job involves
- Atom Computing is seeking a Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer to help lead the design of opto-mechanical subsystems, while also assisting with fixturing, assembly, alignment, and testing
- Work independently and partner with optical engineers and physicists to iteratively design mechanics for optical subsystems in the areas of laser distribution, high numerical aperture microscope imaging, and optical cavities
- Work with physicists to design ultra-high vacuum chambers, vacuum system housing, and mechanical coupling to optical systems
- Analyze and make recommendations to the engineering team to balance competing requirements
- Create novel designs and specifications from the component level up to the system level
- Evaluate suitability of design solutions by performing detailed stability, thermal, and tolerance analysis
- Own complex technical projects from concept to delivery
- Assist in hands-on assembly and precision alignment of finalized designs
- Capable of lifting and moving objects that weigh up to 25 pounds
Our take
Quantum computers are largely defined by their qubit type and coherence times. Atom Computing creates spin qubits by using the neutral atom Strontium-87, which, in one of its nuclear spin states, can coherently remain in that state for a very long time, allowing computers to run deeper quantum circuits.
Qubits are fragile and susceptible to errors, but the company’s unique system yields a record-setting coherence time of 40 seconds which is monumentally faster than other systems, allowing more time for quantum error correction research to detect and correct errors without completely degrading purposeful computation.
The company raised $60 million of capital in its 2022 Series B round and a further $10 million extension in 2024. That same year, Atom Computing announced a partnership with Microsoft, which will see the two companies collaborate on a range of commercially viable quantum computers, containing 1000 qubits each. It appears, then, that Atom Computing is well positioned to provide the leading quantum computing power behind life-changing breakthroughs.
