Company mission

To help build a more resilient and equitable future.

Role

Who you are

  • Whether you’re working solo at a small start up, or owning projects on a larger team, this much is clear: you will be an experienced (5+ years) Mechanical Design Engineer with a background in automation equipment design and sheet metal and/or plastic part design for higher volumes
  • You will bring creative solutions to the table to design parts that are optimized for structural integrity, cost, and modularity
  • Having taken product(s) through the entire product lifecycle (EVT/DVT/PVT) process has taught you to solve technically complex problems using mechanical fundamentals and data driven methodologies
  • You have experience with tools & methods like or similar to FEA, fatigue analysis, root cause analysis, and GD&T
  • Bonus points (but not required!) if you have experience with new product introduction, powder handling equipment, driving best practices and standards within a team and/or managing a team
  • You don’t have to have every listed requirement and skill to be a great fit - you may even teach us something about what we should be looking for!
  • If you are passionate about this opportunity and think you have the skills to succeed, please apply!
  • The following requirements also apply to any roles which will spend any time working in our plants or construction sites (all technician and operations roles, most engineering roles, and many other roles):
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments (example: hot sun, cold, wind, rain, crawl spaces, etc.). Stop work will be called when it is unsafe to work
  • Position may require working at heights including; climbing ladders/equipment, stairs, elevators, and working on scissor lifts
  • Capable of performing repetitive duties including; lifting up to 50 lbs., bending, pushing, pulling, and standing for long periods of time
  • Experience using basic hand and power tools safely

What the job involves

  • In this role, you will be joining the scaled systems mechanical design team and will be focused on architecting the next generation carbonation equipment
  • The carbonation equipment is part of Heirloom’s core technology and requires a low-cost, scalable, and reliable design to meet our goal of removing 1 billion tons of CO2 by 2035
  • In this role, you will be expected to constantly challenge our assumptions and push the limits of design and manufacturing to achieve our ultimate targets
  • As part of the team you will independently lead the development of an automation design module within an integrated line through its entire product lifecycle with cost and reliability as key drivers
  • You will select and integrate automation equipment like motors, actuators, and sensors into your subsystem designs
  • You will design parts for a number of manufacturing processes including but not limited to sheet metal stamping, injection molding, and thermoforming
  • Working with suppliers and our supply chain team, you’ll provide in depth design for manufacturing and assembly feedback required to ensure that our designs are cost efficient, robust and capable of high quality results at scale

Our take

According to the UN, in order to avoid climate disaster the world needs to both reduce carbon emissions and actively remove CO₂ from the atmosphere. Heirloom develops a technology to handle the latter, using limestone to capture carbon directly from the air and permanently store it - and in doing so delivering high-quality carbon credits for businesses to purchase.

Initially, the company stored captured carbon in underground deposits, but it now also boasts the ability to sequester CO₂ into concrete. This process, which was developed alongside its partner, CarbonCure, actually strengthens the concrete, which can then be used in all types of construction projects.

Crucially, because limestone is so widely available - and because the capture process is a chemical reaction - the process requires minimal land and energy. This allows the company to remain relatively low-impact in its operations, making its carbon removal credits more valuable. This has contributed to the achievement of Microsoft purchasing 315,000 metric tons of carbon removal from the company, in one of the biggest deals of its kind to date.
