Who you are
- SurrealDB seeks people of the highest calibre - who are not only exceptionally talented, but who also care deeply about the work they do, and the people with whom they create and promote SurrealDB
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. MBA or other advanced degrees preferred
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in software engineering preferably working in established market players, with a focus on database technologies and cloud computing,
- Proven track record of leadership and management experience, preferably in a fast-paced startup or technology company environment
- Extensive knowledge of database systems (e.g., SQL, NoSQL, NewSQL), cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP), and distributed computing concepts
- Strong understanding of software development methodologies, architecture design principles, and DevOps practices (Jira/Linear, pipeline building and CI/CD management)
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams to achieve common goals
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically, solve complex problems, and drive results in a dynamic and rapidly evolving market
- Passion for innovation, technology, and driving positive change in the industry
- Proven ability to lead and manage teams as well as roll your sleeves up and execute when needed
- Adaptable and able to thrive in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment
What the job involves
- SurrealDB is seeking an experienced VP of Engineering to steer our engineering teams towards success
- Lead and manage the engineering team, providing guidance, mentorship, and support to foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence
- With the CEO, define and execute the engineering roadmap, aligning technical strategies with business objectives to drive product development and innovation
- Oversee the design, development, and implementation of scalable, reliable, and high-performance database cloud solutions, ensuring adherence to best practices and industry standards
- Implement efficient and scalable development processes, including agile practice and Dev Ops practices
- Collaborate closely with product management, sales, and other cross-functional teams to define product requirements, prioritise initiatives, and deliver solutions that meet customer needs and expectations
- Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, tools, and methodologies to optimise efficiency, productivity, and quality of deliverables
- Stay up to date with emerging technologies, industry trends, and competitive landscape to inform strategic decision-making and innovation initiatives
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, fostering open communication, transparency, and trust
- Provide strategic direction and technical leadership to the engineering team, promoting a culture of learning, growth, and accountability
- Manage engineering resources and budget allocations
- Provide reporting to the board and investors as required

Our take
Though there are many businesses building software for the cloud database marketplace, various studies show that companies are now leaning towards fully managed cloud databases for their processes. SurrealDB has been operating in this the sector since 2020 and received its first round of seed funding in 2023. This is indicative of a rising need for cloud database management companies such as this.
Despite larger competitors, SurrealDB’s services have a more specific aim than just the management of databases. The mission is to improve app development by scaling down reliance on back-end APIs and layering, thus making response times to queries faster and simplifying what is often an interconnected and complicated database of servers and programmes.
The company plans to use its seed funding to onboard more employees and prep its cloud launch in 2024, hoping to expand further in the database-as-a-service industry, which is predicted to grow to a value of $24.8 billion by 2025.
