What the job involves

We’re seeking a hands-on Lead Product Engineer to set technical direction across multiple teams
You’ll own critical services end-to-end, guide design and delivery, and level up the team’s engineering excellence. You’ll simplify systems, define org-wide architecture, and lift developer velocity—while partnering with other Engineering, Product and Business leaders to align technology with company strategy
Design, build, and deliver scalable, performant, and secure solutions that power Flashfood’s platform
Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code to ship new features and systems
Troubleshoot, optimize, and refactor existing systems to improve reliability, scalability, and performance
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to quickly iterate and deliver value to customers
Ensure technical solutions meet both immediate and long-term business goals
Technical Leadership (Coach Focus)
Lead technical design discussions and own architecture decisions for critical projects
Guide and mentor engineers, providing code reviews, technical feedback, and hands-on support
Advocate for engineering best practices, including testing, CI/CD, observability, and security
Collaborate with Engineering Leadership and Product Managers to align technical delivery and estimates with product roadmaps
Drive initiatives to improve developer experience and team productivity
Partner with leadership and product counterparts to define a unified roadmap that integrates both product and technical initiatives ensuring alignment with overall business goals
Play a key role in identifying risks and communicating while balancing trade-offs between technical debt, delivery speed, and system reliability
Serve as a thought leader in engineering, setting a high standard of excellence by inspiring your team and fostering cross-functional collaboration with a positive, growth-oriented mindset

Our take

As the world moves to become more sustainable, issues such as global food waste are increasingly apparent. Food waste is not only a travesty because of world hunger but also because of the devastating greenhouse gas emissions caused as a result.

Flashfood considered how they could tackle this issue. The mobile marketplace provides customers with access to discounted food nearing its best-by date and salvaging food that can be used to help feed those in need or those who are unable to afford fresh and healthy food. The app allows users to browse through available deals at participating stores near them. Customers can then purchase items directly in the app and pick up orders from the Flashfood zone in their participating store.

The company has numerous partners across Canada and the United States, and has saved shoppers millions on their grocery bills, as well as removing gargantuan amounts of product from the waste cycle. Indeed, its collaboration with food solutions company SpartanNash alone has saved families $1.9M, and diverted one million pounds of food waste. Flashfood continues to develop its strategic partnerships and further its expansion, on the back on earning the number one spot in the Social Good Category on the 2023 Fast Company's list of the most innovative companies.
