Who you are
- Top candidates will have a portfolio of creative work that has pushed the creative boundaries of brand design
- This person will bring creative ideas for how to approach visual storytelling across the newsroom and be experienced in various areas of design, including typography, motion and data visualization
- They will have professional expertise using Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator
- Strong editorial judgement, superb communication skills, and impeccible organizational skills are critical for this role, as you will work closely with editorial leadership, video producers, and freelancers to elevate our storytelling through compelling design and motion graphics
- 5+ years of digital design experience with a portfolio demonstrating strong, relevant work
- A passion for Vox’s mission of helping audiences understand what really matters
- Deep familiarity with Vox’s video voice and style
- Superb design taste and attention to detail and accuracy
- Experience and comfort with providing visual feedback
- Experience in editing
- Experience in finding and collecting relevant archival footage and material
- Creative drive to explore new approaches to visual storytelling
- Awareness of what media competitors are doing in this space
- Strong communication, organizational and time-management skills
- Collaborative team player who will enjoy working across the organization
What the job involves
- Vox is looking for an experienced art and motion graphics director to work across video, podcast, and text
- The art and motion graphics director will oversee design and animation across various formats, and work towards visual excellence across all platforms
- Design visuals for Vox across a variety of formats and platforms, including videos, podcasts, social channels, text, and newsletters
- Create original assets for video and video podcasts
- Manage art deliverables from freelancers for video production
- Collaborate closely with editorial leadership, Vox’s other art director, and video producers
- Provide art direction and graphic supervision for video packages for visual clarity and adhering to the Vox style guide
- Mentor video producers to develop their own visual style within the Vox universe
- Manage the progress of design and animation skills around the video team
- Own & iterate on Vox video style guides in the form of tools, templates, and rules
- Provide clear and constructive notes when delivering feedback across formats to newsroom colleagues
- Adhere to all journalistic and legal standards at all times
- Complete additional duties as assigned

Our take
Whilst magazines and newspapers are not as popular as they once were, digital journalism is alive and well. However, many people feel that digital content is becoming less natural and informative, and instead has become focused on sensationalism and ‘click-bait’ as a means of advertising.
Vox Media publishes media across various digital platforms, focussing on providing insightful and informative journalism through storytelling, commentary, and cultural conversation. Whilst the company's editorial networks are meant for entertainment purposes, they do this through a means that increases awareness and interest of affiliate brands. Generally, their digital content aims to lead readers to subscribe to a podcast, click a link, or purchase a product.
Marketing through digital publishing is nothing new, but Vox Media has approached this with an interesting perspective by focussing on producing content that inspires a reader to follow up on a brand, as opposed to being suggested to do so. This helps the content remain natural and legitimate, as opposed to feeling spammy and pushy. With numerous acquisitions at its back, and a recent and substantial investment in the company, Vox Media will continue scaling its existing brands and operations, as well as securing the resources to continue its ascent into the future.
