Role
Who you are
- 8+ years of experience as a software engineer building and maintaining scalable, production-ready systems
- Strong back-end focused full-stack experience with modern SQL/NoSQL databases and high-level languages such as Java, TypeScript, or Go
- Hands-on experience with microservice and/or event-based architectures
- Proven ability to lead complex technical projects across teams, owning the full development lifecycle from planning and execution to launch and maintenance
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with experience aligning engineering efforts to business goals
- Experience mentoring engineers, reviewing system architectures, and defining scalable design patterns
Desirable
- Computer Science degree or equivalent practical experience
- Familiarity with modern frameworks and infrastructure including TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js, Kafka, and AWS
- Experience working with external APIs and authentication protocols (e.g., OAuth 2.0)
- Comfortable participating in on-call rotations, with the ability to independently troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues
- Background in building products that require high reliability and accuracy, such as healthcare, finance, or mission-critical systems
- Prior experience in early-stage or high-growth startup environments
What the job involves
- We’re looking for a Staff Software Engineer to help lead Rula’s Growth team in building scalable, high-impact systems that accelerate both patient and provider enrollment
- You’ll drive technical strategy and execution across some of our most user-visible surfaces—our marketing site, entry form, provider directory, and marketing automation systems
- This role is ideal for someone who thrives in cross-functional environments, enjoys mentoring teammates, and is passionate about building systems that directly influence the company's ability to reach more people in need of care
- As a technical leader, you'll shape architecture and engineering standards while partnering closely with Product, Design, and other engineering teams to drive durable, long-term solutions that deliver real business outcomes
- You’ll join a collaborative, fast-moving team with a strong sense of ownership, where you’ll have the opportunity to raise the bar on quality, scalability, and developer experience across the company
Our take
More than half of adults in the US will be diagnosed with a mental illness during their lifetime, and yet inaccessibility of treatment remains a huge problem. That’s what Rula aims to solve, with its platform that matches users to therapists that are covered by their insurance.
The company, formerly known as Path, is partnered with a number of major health insurers, including UnitedHealthcare and Anthem, making it an accessible service for millions of Americans. It allows users to browse therapists almost instantly, with just a short questionnaire to fill in before their matches are shown.
Though the market for tech services offering mental health provision is an overstuffed one, containing giants like BetterHelp as well as newer competitors, Rula's partnerships with insurers do mark it out against the crowd. The business has been steadily growing, and significantly bolstered its executive team in 2023. Its recent rebrand was designed to emphasize its vision to improve not only access to mental health care, but also clinical outcomes.
