What the job involves
- This role is graded as: Senior Associate – Regulatory
- We regulate financial services firms in the UK, to keep financial markets fair, thriving and effective. By joining us, you’ll play a key part in protecting consumers, driving economic growth, and shaping the future of UK finance services
- The Authorisations Division ensures the firms and individuals who apply to us to be authorised or approved understand how we test they will comply with our regulation. We use Authorisation to help deliver our public offer, and as a tool to protect consumers from the harm that can be caused by bad conduct in the financial services industry
- The Register and Authorisations Services (R&AS) department builds confidence in Authorisations' decision making, systems, processes, data and platforms. Our integrated, high-quality services enable effective determinations, and a strong firm and consumer offer by providing operational rigour, insights and capability development, managing policy, frameworks and process change and improving our data, digital products and technology
- Support work across the Capabilities and Controls team across a range of operational functions, including governance, risk, controls, quality assurance, business improvement and implementation
- Work with colleagues across different teams to understand operational issues, identify themes and support practical improvements
- Make sure actions, risks, decisions and dependencies are clearly owned, tracked, progressed and followed through
- Use sound judgement to prioritise activity, spot where issues need attention and escalate matters appropriately
- Support governance forums, including preparing updates and papers, coordinating inputs and ensuring clear follow-up on agreed actions
- Support the division’s approach to risk and controls by helping teams identify, assess and manage operational risks in a proportionate way

Our take
Developed on the back of the Financial Services Act of 2012, the Financial Conduct Authority is a regulatory body that acts as a regulator for financial firms, ensuring the integrity of the financial markets in the UK. Broadly focused on financial companies that provide consumer services, it’s governed by the Bank of England and therefore acts independently of the government.
The FCA is responsible for regulatory innovations, such as stronger customer authentication requirements, including biometric and code requirements for payments, that have clamped down on fraud and improved security for national consumers. The FCA also introduced the Anti-Money Laundering Supervision in 2017.
The organisation’s independence from government ensures its impartiality as a regulator. In the late 2010s, it set up the cryptoasset registration, a department responsible for ensuring the legality of crypto payments. This has become an important aspect of national counter terrorism measures, and exemplifies the complex and vital work that the organisation carries out.
