Role
Who you are
- 8+ years of experience developing, architecting, optimizing and shipping high performance Android applications
- You should be able to demonstrate a concrete understanding of Android best practices
- Experience with Android libraries like Android X/Jetpack, Room, Kotlin Coroutines, Retrofit
- Familiarity with modern Android architectures and frameworks, like Model-View Intent (MVI), Kotlin Flow, and Compose
- You’re confident in the Android ecosystem and have used modern Android tools and frameworks
- Familiarity with emerging technologies like Compose is a plus
- Familiarity with Ruby on Rails or API design is a plus
- You have built and executed on Android technical roadmaps
- You find pride in shipping code that’s clean, DRY, and well-tested
- You take ownership of your projects, from technical planning and implementation to testing and deployment
- You enjoy partnering up with product and design teams to deliver a great user experience
- You enjoy partnering with web and backend staff engineers on API design and system-wide changes that could affect mobile
- You have the confidence to communicate something technical to a non-technical team member
- You know how to cut out the jargon and talk to others like human beings
- You know how to roll up your sleeves. We like systems that run well, but when things don't go as planned we support each other
What the job involves
- Babylist is looking for a Staff Software Engineer, Android to join and lead on our mobile team. This team is responsible for the core experiences of our users through their new parent journey with Babylist
- You’ll work with expert Product Managers, Design, and software engineers to build out the experience that is the core of our business and execute other key initiatives
- You’ll design the architecture, manage the performance, and drive decisions to grow the code base on our key consumer app
- You’ll collaborate with our product, design, and mobile development teams to build exciting new features and experiences in an app that people love. Our Android app is used by hundreds of thousands of delighted users -- that’s why it’s rated five star on Google Play!
- You’ll have the autonomy and control to shape the future of our codebase
- You’ll collaborate with our platform team to design APIs
- You’ll own platform and infrastructure projects to ensure our app is staying stable and up to date
Our take
Since its 2011 launch, Babylist has grown into one of the most highly rated baby registries in the US. The difference it offers is that it allows users to include products from any store in their registries. On top of this, the company’s model also focuses heavily on creating informational content, which allows it to generate ad revenue while building customer loyalty.
Originally scaled with fairly low venture funding, Babylist claims half of new parents in the US now use its services. This, given that the baby products industry is worth close to $90 billion, shows the immense growth of the company as well as speaking to the impact it has made in the space.
Babylist has seen strong funding in the past which fuelled projects such as the launch of virtual showrooms, and facilitated the company's expansion further into the market. The company acquired Expectful, a health and wellness tool, in 2023 with the long-term vision to combine the companies into a larger health and wellness media property, that can help people navigate all parts of parenthood from fertility to diapers.
