Role
Who you are
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred
- 7+ years of progressive experience in revenue accounting, including at least 3 years in a leadership role within a Software as a Service (SaaS) technology company
- A mix of public accounting and industry experience; Big 4 preferred
- In-depth knowledge of revenue recognition principles (ASC 606) and related technical accounting standards
- Familiarity with SaaS business models, pricing strategies, and revenue streams
- Proficiency in utilizing revenue management systems (e.g. ARM, or RevPro) and financial software (Netsuite)
- Strong leadership abilities, with a proven track record of effectively leading and developing teams
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, capable of effectively engaging and influencing cross-functional stakeholders
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to proactively identify and resolve complex issues, and drive best practices
- Ability to work autonomously and as a team member, meet tight deadlines, and thrive in an agile, often ambiguous, environment under pressure
What the job involves
- You will lead the revenue accounting and order-to-cash processes of our fast-paced organization
- You will be working closely with cross functional partners to ensure timely and accurate treatment, recording and reporting of revenue in accordance with ASC 606
- You will also have the opportunity to mentor and manage other team members as we continue to scale
- This is a great opportunity to spearhead the evolution of Docker’s revenue processes into the future. As a key member of our Accounting department, you will play a crucial role in owning and optimizing all revenue processes
- Lead and oversee all technical and operational aspects of revenue accounting, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and company policies
- Provide guidance and expertise on complex technical accounting matters related to revenue recognition and other operational aspects of order-to-cash
- Develop and maintain revenue recognition policies and procedures in accordance with ASC 606 and other applicable accounting guidelines
- Analyze financial transactions and contracts to determine appropriate accounting treatment and document positions in technical memos, ensuring compliance with GAAP and other relevant standards
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate revenue recognition for all revenue streams
- Lead the revenue close and reporting activities
- Manage and oversee revenue systems, including migrations, upgrades, and enhancements, to ensure efficient and accurate revenue processing
- Collaborate with FP&A, IT and Sales teams to optimize revenue systems, improve processes, and drive automation initiatives
- Manage and mentor a team of revenue accountants, fostering a culture of growth, collaboration, and high performance
- Continuously review and optimize revenue accounting processes to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and scalability as the company grows
- Collaborate with external auditors to provide audit support, including alignment on revenue positions and accounting treatments
- In your first 30 days:
- Familiarize yourself with the current revenue accounting processes and systems at Docker
- Establish relationships with the finance team, cross-functional partners, and your direct reports
- Conduct an initial assessment of existing revenue recognition policies and procedures
- In your first 90 days:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Product, IT, and Sales, to enable multi-dimensional pricing and bundling strategies for our SaaS products
- Propose and implement improvements to the revenue accounting process for increased efficiency and compliance
- Provide recommendations for system enhancements or migrations to streamline revenue processing
- In the first year:
- Successfully lead any planned migrations or upgrades of revenue systems, ensuring a smooth transition with minimal disruptions
- Oversee the implementation of refined revenue recognition policies and procedures, achieving compliance with accounting standards
- Establish a high-performing and cohesive team, with measurable improvements in team productivity, accuracy, and professional growth
Our take
Docker supplies a hub and desktop solution to simplify the workflow of app development teams. Originally known for popularising the idea of containerising software, it saw itself outpaced by Kubernetes. However, the company has identified a problem with the growing complexity of containerisation, with some apps consisting of dozens or even hundreds of containers - which is what it now addresses.
Docker has had a difficult time in the recent past, with 2019 seeing it sell off its enterprise business, reduce its workforce by hundreds, and change its leadership team. As a well known brand and ecosystem for containerisation, however, it aims to lure developers back to its product as well as to take advantage of the growing global demand for app development.
Returning to focus on developers rather than large companies was certainly a gamble, but one that seems to have paid off. The company has returned to profitability and raised Series C funding in 2022, which is cited to fund hiring new talent, ramping up its business, and continuing to develop and refine its product. It's also embarked on a series of acquisitions to bolster its business, with speculation mounting about its possible sale in the near future.
