Who you are
- We’re looking for an innovative thinker with strong securities regulatory, legal drafting and negotiation skills, who is an excellent business partner and is pragmatic and creative
- A law degree and minimum 5-8 years of experience in securities and/or corporate law, gained at a major Canadian law firm or an in-house corporate legal department
- Asset management expertise, including experience launching private funds, ETFs and/or mutual funds
- Familiarity with the regulation of Canadian capital markets intermediaries, including investment dealers, investment fund managers, portfolio managers, custodians, trustees and index providers
- Rigorous analytical skills and ability to proactively issue spot and problem solve
- Skills to effectively communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal audiences
- Project management and organizational skills that can be used to balance competing priorities

What the job involves
- The Director, Legal (Wealth Management) will join Wealthsimple’s Regulatory Team, which is a team of trailblazing legal, compliance and risk experts, who thrive by partnering with Wealthsimple’s R&D teams to create new and innovative products

- The Director, Legal (Wealth Management) will help build Wealthsimple’s innovative wealth management product suite
- Our wealth management roadmap is new and novel, with no existing blueprint
- As a key partner to our Product and Investment Research teams, you will actively identify opportunities for growth and scalability, including new product features, account types and investment products
- Provide legal and regulatory advice that enables the development and execution of our wealth management roadmap, including providing advice related to establishing and optimizing private alternative funds, ETFs and managed investing products
- Work closely across related functions, including with our Product, Investment Research, Compliance and Operations teams on the launch of new product offerings and services, and provide ongoing support and advice for existing operations
- Negotiate and draft agreements and disclosure for Wealthsimple’s wealth management products, including investment management agreements, fund subscription agreements, sub-advisory agreements, offering memoranda, prospectuses, client brochures, fund facts, client account agreements and other account opening documents
- Overseeing and advising on governance and risk matters related to our funds, including organizing IRC meetings and board approvals
- Provide advice in connection with Canadian securities laws, including National Instrument 31-103, National Instrument 81-102 and CIRO rules
Our take
Wealthsimple is one of a crop of robo-advisors trying to democratize investment management. These companies are disrupting the industry by automating many of the processes involved in investment removing the need for human advisors.
But while other so-called robo-advisors are focused on courting the high end of the market, Wealthsimple is trying to provide the same types of tools and advice to all users, regardless of the amount they have to invest.
Wealthsimple does have higher fees than some other robo-advisors such as Betterment and Charles Schwab. However, the company believes that it provides a more user-friendly platform, tailored to millennials who will be attracted to Wealthsimple due to its ease of use and social impact offerings.
