Who you are
- This role would be ideal for someone who wants to move from a current in-house role and into a VC backed scale-up where they can actually make a difference
- Or perhaps you’re considering a jump from private practice or are finally fed up with life at the Criminal Bar - we’re not picky where your legal experience has come from!
- You’re probably an NQ or 1 Year PQE but we’re more than welcome to candidates with more experience than this
- Empathetic leader, we don’t expect someone to have management experience stepping into this role and we’re willing to coach and teach you about this. What we look for in return is someone who is a natural, empathetic leader. Maybe you’ve been part of your firm’s buddy system or took on leadership roles during your time at university, great!
- Impeccable attention to detail, you’ll be the standard bearer for work in the legal team, your fingerprints will be across a huge amount of the work we ship. We move incredibly fast and must always be precise
- A natural communicator, you’ll work with senior stakeholders and manage a small team, you’ll need to act as a vessel for messages up and down the business
What the job involves

- As Associate Legal Counsel at Zinc you’ll be joining the Legal and Compliance department at an exciting time of growth. Already a team of five, we’ll be closer to ten by the end of the year and you’ll be a core part of that growth
- You’ll be managed by and work directly with our Head of Legal on high impact tasks. You’ll own the delivery of pivotal commercial contact negotiations, key tactical legal projects, developing and maximising our legal tech stack and you’ll assist on strategic level work directly with our Head of Legal
- You’ll work closely with the Product teams ensuring that everything we ship is GDPR compliant and you’ll work directly with the Revenue and Customer teams, enabling us to smash our company targets. You’ll also have a small pod of Legal and Compliance Executives to manage directly
- This is a great opportunity to continue to refine your legal skills in a high growth environment. As a VC backed scale-up, Zinc will provide you with autonomy, ownership and real responsibility from day one whilst allowing you to grow into yourself as a manager and future leader of the business
- Zinc moves at pace and you’ll be able to shape the future direction of travel for the Legal department and enable our success as a business in the long term. Helping shape our approach to risk
- Managing a small pod of Legal and Compliance Executive, previous management experience is not required!
- Owning the delivery of pivotal, high value commercial contracts, contributing directly to our Revenue goals
- Working with our Product team to ensure everything we build is GDPR compliant
- Upskilling and enabling our Customer and Revenue teams on the legal and regulatory landscape that we operate in
- Working directly with our Head of Legal on high value, strategic level projects

The existing processes for referencing and background checking suffer from notable inefficiencies, marked by biases, time-consuming procedures, and an intimidating experience for candidates. Addressing these challenges, Zinc Work aims to solve these processes by introducing an automated reference and background-checking solution.
Setting itself apart in the market, Zinc Work focuses on the user-friendly design of its solution, its swift integration into existing Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), and its high level of customisation. With a vision to offer a solution for background checks, Zinc covers a spectrum from criminal record checks to financial, education, identity, employment, and reference checks.
Funding secured in 2023 was led by esteemed financial services investor AVP (AXA Venture Partners) and supported by Seedcamp, and will facilitate the launch of groundbreaking industry initiatives. These include the introduction of the first reusable global Right To Work check, the first Employment verification reference integrated with HMRC, and a background check template library collaboratively contributed to by over 40 Zinc Work customers. This financial injection underscored Zinc's commitment to innovation and reinforced its position as a trailblazer in the realm of automated reference and background checking solutions.
