Role
Who you are
- Proficiency in at least one of the database products such as Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MSSQL, MongoDB, or MariaDB. Understanding of system architecture of at least one database product, including but not limited to SQL, memory structure, transaction model, storage engines, and operational diagnostics
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in database-related product management, with preference given to those with development or cloud database product management experience
- Experience working in the database ecosystem, familiarity with the TiDB ecosystem is a plus
- Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related field
- Excellent communication skills, able to collaborate efficiently with internal teams and external clients
- Ability to translate a set of complex requirements into well-defined deliverables
What the job involves
- We are hiring a Senior/Principal Product Manager - Database Kernel to lead the evolution of the database core
- You will own the strategy and roadmap for key kernel components such as storage, transactions, query execution, and replication, making critical trade-offs across performance, correctness, and scalability
- Partnering closely with senior engineers and architects, you will drive core capabilities from design to production, enabling the database to support mission-critical workloads at scale
- Formulate the strategic planning of the product, continuously improving and enhancing it through activities such as gathering user feedback, collaborating with internal teams, and working with external partners
- Collaborate closely with the development team, leading and driving the targeted creation and successful release of features
- Identify ways to improve customer satisfaction through the design and supervision of a comprehensive set of products, tools, and features
- Create product-related promotional and marketing materials, and drive product and product strategy
- Establish a feedback loop with customers to incorporate enhancements into the product
- Continuously monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices, applying these insights to enhance our products
Our take
Frustrations with the available database solutions are what inspired PingCAP. When three infrastructure engineers got together, their aim was to eliminate the issues with management, scalability and maintenance of databases by creating their own open source distributed database.
With worldwide contributions from like-minded developers, the cloud-based NewSQL database TiDB was created. It soon gained great popularity and so, being open source, is constantly being enhanced.
With the creation of a product that eradicates the problems faced when attempting to scale up traditional relational databases, a wealth of data migration tools and no vendor lock-in, TiDB is an attractive proposition for businesses that need future flexibility. Notable clients include China Zheshang Bank, PatSnap and leading Asian logistics company Ninja Van.
With the backing of $270 million Series D funding in 2020, TiDB continues to grow, and a portfolio of complementary products is in development. It also gained positive publicity from its receiving the award for Open Source Data Solution Provider of the Year from the Data Breakthrough Awards 2024.
