- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience across public and private sectors, including at least 3 years with a Big 4 firm
- Deep expertise with U.S. GAAP and public company reporting for fast-growing global consumer marketplace companies
- Proven success building and leading high-performing teams. You’re known for empathetic leadership, honest feedback, and developing talent into trusted partners
- Extensive revenue accounting experience, including complex reconciliations and high-volume payments/platform accounting
- Proficiency in NetSuite, ZIP, Stripe, PayPal, and SQL, with strong technical accounting and systems aptitude
- Solid track record of cross-functional collaboration across finance, engineering, product, and other teams across time zones
- A strong ownership mindset. You’re comfortable moving quickly, rolling up your sleeves, and driving results in a rapidly changing environment
What the job involves
- We’re looking for an Assistant Controller to lead core accounting functions and serve as a key thought partner to the Controller
- You will own monthly close, accounting policies, and critical technical matters while partnering closely with Finance leadership and cross‑functional teams for one of the fastest growing marketplaces of all time
- This is a true builder role: you’ll scale systems and processes, lead complex projects, and develop exceptional talent while staying close to the details that matter

- Lead core revenue, general ledger, technical, and platform accounting workstreams supporting a high‑scale marketplace
- Own the global month‑end close and financial audit processes, driving timely, accurate reporting and audit readiness
- Build, mentor, and scale a high‑performing accounting team
- Establish and maintain accounting policies, including technical accounting memos on critical positions
- Manage relationships with external auditors and technical accounting advisors
- Partner with Finance on planning, management reporting, and treasury management to support scalable growth
- Collaborate with cross‑functional partners (Finance, Tax, Legal, Payments, Risk, Data, and Engineering) to ensure smooth marketplace operations and compliance across the US and international entities
Our take
The collectable toy market is large, and Whatnot has built a unique social platform that enables sellers to use livestreams to showcase their products and reach more buyers. The company’s focus is on collectable toys, some of which are rare and can cost thousands of dollars. It's also expanded to sports cards, coins, comics and more.
The idea of Whatnot was led by buyer trends. Instagram's live feature became a popular place for selling toys and trading cards, but of course was not set up to facilitate bidding or handling payments after a sale occurs. Whatnot combines live showcasing with follow-up sale capabilities, thus serving the community in a more novel way than established collectibles market players such as eBay.
The company has grown fast. It was established in 2019 and has already expanded from its original category - Funko Pop figurines - to Pokemon cards, pins, sports cards, and many more. There is still plenty of scope for expanding into new categories, as the company aims to establish itself as the go-to for this large niche, which will be facilitated by the strong levels of funding that Whatnot has raised.
