Who you are
- Experience in leading data functions across data engineering, analytics, and data science at a strategic level for companies with multi-sided platforms, ideally in B2C SaaS
- Strong business acumen with the ability to align data initiatives with company objectives and deliver business-driven outcomes
- Proven ability to communicate complex data concepts to non-technical stakeholders and executives, translating insights into actionable strategies
- Expertise in developing and implementing advanced data models, architectures, and best practices
- Experience managing significant change initiatives and adopting new tools, ensuring alignment with business goals
- Strong project management skills, with a history of overseeing data roadmaps and driving cross-functional collaboration
- Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop diverse data teams
- Experience building strong partnerships across departments and influencing organizational strategy with data-driven insights
- Ability to drive compliance with data governance, privacy, and regulatory requirements
What the job involves
- As the VP, Data, you will set the overall direction for our data department and play a key role in embedding data at the heart of Prodigy’s strategy
- Your leadership will span across Data Engineering, Data Analytics, and Data Science, driving innovation and change throughout the organization
- You will work closely with the executive team to ensure that data drives strategic decisions, unlocks new business opportunities, and fosters a data-driven culture across the company. This is a pivotal role where your vision for data will help shape the future of game-based learning
- Define and execute the long-term data vision and strategy, aligning it with company-wide goals
- Lead the data teams across engineering, analytics, and data science, ensuring the successful delivery of impactful insights and business solutions
- Drive innovation in data methodologies, tools, and industry best practices to keep Prodigy at the forefront of data advancements
- Partner with executive leadership to influence the broader organizational strategy using data-driven insights and analytics
- Oversee the data roadmap, managing resources effectively while ensuring alignment with strategic objectives
- Lead significant change initiatives, ensuring successful adoption of new tools, methodologies, and innovations
- Ensure data practices align with internal and external compliance standards to mitigate risk
- Build and foster a strong data-driven culture across all departments and levels within Prodigy
Our take
Since starting as an undergraduate project in 2011 by founders Alexander Peters and Rohan Mahinker, Prodigy’s e-learning game has built up a millions strong network of users, who can also make use of one-to-one tutoring via the platform.
Since launching, it’s been exclusively focused on Mathematics learning, offering a sandbox game that allows students to build and explore their own online world while learning curriculum-aligned skills. However in 2022, Prodigy moved into English Learning Arts (ELA) through its new game, which executes a similar approach to its Math counterpart.
Prodigy has always been completely free of charge for students and schools. It makes its money by selling ‘freemium’ memberships to parents and guardians, who can opt into packages in return for progress reports, as well as bonus game elements and merchandise.
This soft-sell approach hasn’t deterred investors, however, with the company raising one of the largest EdTech Series B rounds ever. This funding fuelled the ELA game rollout, as well as expansion into the UK, India, and Australia. In 2023, Prodigy led thought leadership panels on gaming in education at SXSW EDU and has achieved a staggering 55 million players for its Maths game. It was named Adaptive Learning Solution Provider of the Year at the EdTech Breakthrough Awards 2024, further indicating its position as a leader in the market.
