To become the go-to platform to access information.
UK national and regional newspapers made £5bn in ad revenue in 2005 - by 2019, this had dropped to around £2bn. According to PWC, this trend is only going to continue, meaning newspapers and magazines are in real trouble.
Cafeyn offers these businesses a way out. Cafeyn's app enables users to access hundreds of newspapers and magazines from one place. Think of it like Spotify for magazines - users pay a monthly subscription fee, and in return receive access to a huge range of content. At the same time, newspapers and magazines access a much broader market than before. Streaming services helped save the music industry - rescuing it from a $6 billion slump from 2005 to 2014 - and Cafeyn may hold the key to a similar rebound for the newspaper and magazine industry.
E-reading platforms have exploded in recent years, and Cafeyn will face fierce competition from the likes of Txtr, Bookmate, 24Symbols and Amazon's Kindle platform. Cafeyn's current strategy is to strengthen partnerships with publishers (such as the Telegraph, and its acquisition of children's media publisher Kidjo) in its existing European markets while expanding its presence internationally, focusing on North America. Following its official launch in Canada in 2021, Cafeyn will be working hard to replicate the success it has already had in existing markets.
