Who you are
- We are looking for people with a strong interest in long term investing
- People who will thrive in this role are those who are intellectually curious, pro-active, and who enjoy working as part of a team to provide healthy challenge and analyse qualitative and quantitative data to identify great investments
- The successful candidate will have high levels of integrity and strong relationship management skills
- Demonstrable experience of researching and analysing public equities, either on the buy side or sell side
- Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, including complex financial modelling
- Experience of delivering key projects/pieces of work to a high standard within tight deadlines
- Ability to build strong relationships with counterparties and colleagues, while resolving any conflicts in a confident and constructive manner
- Excellent IT skills, including proficiency in Excel
- Knowledge of Wellcome’s mission of key strategic priorities and how role relates to these
- Ability to work on multiple pieces of work across stakeholder groups
What the job involves
- Contract type: Permanent
- We are looking for an Investment Analyst to join our team
- You will be working within the Investment team reporting to a Managing Partner, Investments in the team
- The Investment Analyst will cover existing holdings in directly held public equities and conduct research on potential new investments
- This includes fundamental research and analytical work, as well as building and maintaining relationships with company management teams, boards and other industry participants
- Provide qualitative and quantitative analytical skills to the portfolio management team, which is responsible for investing directly and indirectly across all investment asset classes, with a specific focus on directly held listed equities
- Assist in the monitoring and review of existing public equity holdings, and evaluation of new opportunities
- Research investment ideas to contribute to the wider portfolio
- Actively network and promote Wellcome in the investment industry. Liaise with third parties, including company management teams and boards, sell side analysts and other buy side investors
- Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments

Our take
The Wellcome Trust was originally founded in 1936 to fund medical research and has since grown into the UK’s largest private scientific research fund, and one of the wealthiest charities in the world. Disbursing over £1 billion in funds a year, it has provided funding to numerous medical research projects in its focus areas of mental health, climate & health and infectious diseases. These include the Cancer Genome Project and the Ebola Emergency Initiative.
Wellcome's recent decision to divest itself of its shares in fossil fuels has also relieved it of a persistent source of controversy, as this was potentially hindering the credibility of its climate change research. Wellcome has since partnered with the World Economic Forum to collect data on how climate change is affecting health worldwide.
The company is also moving to adjust to a more global role. The majority of its funding has historically been allocated to UK firms, but as climate change and infectious diseases know no borders, neither does research into solutions to these problems. ln 2019 it established an office in Berlin to strengthen its scientific links in the EU and to allow it to more easily fund important research outside of the UK.
