Role
Who you are
- 7+ years of proven experience solving complex business problems with analytics, statistical analysis, and coding (Python, R, SQL)
- Advanced knowledge of statistical modeling: linear/multivariate models, hypothesis testing, time series analysis
- Familiarity with causal inference methods: instrumental variables, diff-in-diff, fixed effects regression, synthetic controls, double ML
- Track record of delivering robust, production-grade data solutions in a cloud environment
- Strong communication skills—able to translate results and recommendations for non-technical stakeholders
- Hands-on experience with large datasets, cloud platforms (Azure), and version control (GitHub)
- Demonstrated commitment to code quality and reproducible research
- Ability to commute to Watertown, MA at least once a week

- Experience solving marketing, subscriber growth, or operational problems in e-commerce or similar domains

What the job involves
- We are seeking a Senior Data Scientist to uncover critical member insights from our marketing, operational, and financial data, driving smarter decisions and delivering exceptional offers, products, and services.
- The primary focus will be statistical analysis, high-quality predictive modeling, and end-to-end development of AI and ML systems integrated with our eCommerce platform, customer portal, and internal applications
- Partner cross-functionally with Marketing, Operations, Product, and Engineering teams to translate business needs into data-driven solutions
- Perform advanced analysis and modeling using Python and Spark SQL
- Own projects from ideation and stakeholder engagement through production deployment and impact measurement
- Provide analytical thought leadership, propose new data experiments, and identify opportunities for measurable impact
- Champion data quality, reproducibility, and scalable code using best practices in version control (GitHub) and cloud infrastructure (Azure)
- Mentor junior Data Scientists, Data Engineers, and Analytics Engineers to develop their technical and business acumen
- Present complex findings and actionable recommendations to diverse audiences, including senior leadership
Our take
Dollar sales of meat are on the rise, with a growing consumer preference in the US for sustainably sourced, fairly bought meat. Subscription box purchases across DTC businesses are proving a runaway success, too. So it’s perhaps unsurprising that ButcherBox, a subscription meat company combining all these upwards trends, has been having a strong few years.
Given that ButcherBox hit upon a smart market niche, it is no surprise that competing startups are entering the space - and existing butchers are expanding to take a piece too. FarmFoods, for example, is a highly recommended rival, and Omaha Steaks saw substantial spikes in interest recently. That said, ButcherBox has continued to conduct a savvy marketing campaign that sees it win out on name recognition, and has allowed the company to bootstrap itself to $600M in revenue.
Recently, the company expanded into the pet food market, capitalizing on its large base of pet-owning customers, a move that holds significant potential as a promising new venture. Additionally, the company made its first acquisition in Truffle Shuffle, a vitual cook-along platform. This acqusition is aimed at boosting cosnumer confidence across the US, particularly within the ButcherBox community. The company is going from success to success and it will be an exciting one to watch in the coming years.
