Who you are

Experience designing and delivering APIs and backend services meeting highest software quality standards
Extensive knowledge of computer science fundamentals, incl. data structures, object-oriented programming and software design patterns (GoF and cloud-native)
Several years of proven experience in software development and operation practices covering the full software development lifecycle, ideally in an E-commerce business
Deep understanding in object-oriented languages and/or Javascript/ Typescript. Ideally experience with multiple databases (RDMBS, NoSQL, Redis, ...) and messaging services (Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS ...), run in a cloud (e.g. AWS)
Understanding of the importance of well-organized codebase and documentation
Capability of implementing unit, integration, end-to-end and load tests
You are highly self-organized and interested in taking over ownership and bringing the team to the best solution
You have strong analytical skills and are an open-minded and creative team player
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer or Electrical Engineering, Business Informatics or equivalency in relevant work experience

What the job involves

We are seeking a talented and passionate Backend Engineer to join our dynamic team
As a Backend Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, building, and maintaining robust, scalable, and high-performance backend systems
You will work closely with frontend engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to deliver reliable and efficient solutions that power exceptional user experiences
You will architect, design and implement Emma’s technology platform, supporting our growth from E-commerce into SleepTech
You will implement product features (in Typescript or Golang) that will help improve people’s sleep and support Emma’s core business
You will implement backend services in a services-oriented architecture (APIfirst) in a cloud-native environment (AWS)
You will fully own, i.e. develop, maintain and operate your team’s tech stack
You will be a team player as part of an agile, empowered team and contribute to the development of fellow engineers
You will contribute to the improvement of our CI&CD and DevOps & SRE practices

Our take

Emma makes mattresses, bed frames and other sleep accessories that can be delivered right to your door. The company was started in Frankfurt in 2013 at the beginning of a wave of similar companies emerging around Europe. It has since grown to operate in over 30 countries, and has become the world's most international direct to customer sleep brand.

The company owes this to its 'omnichannel strategy', selling both online and in store via retail partnerships, and it produces mattresses locally in each economy. With the launch of its retail-specific product assortment "Emma Select" and its pan-European partnership with the interior giant JYSK, Emma now collaborates with more than 200 different retail partners worldwide.

Emma's products continue to be awarded by reputable test institutes such as Stiftung Warentest in Germany and Which? (UK). It is aiming to strengthen both retail and marketplaces teams to anchor its expansion in Latin America as well as in the US. It will also be strengthening the product team and bringing yet more new sleep innovations to market.
