Who you are
- Educational Background: A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is required. CPA is preferred
- Experience: You should have a minimum of 5 years of experience in general and/or revenue accounting. Must be familiar with media and advertising businesses, agreements, and revenue recognition principles (identifying performance deliverables and recognizing revenue accordingly), including affiliate and digital media
- Technical Expertise: Proficiency in GAAP revenue recognition accounting principles and methods is vital
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets
- Analytical Skills: Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret data, conduct variance analysis, and make data-driven decisions
- Attention to Detail: Precision and a keen eye for detail are necessary to maintain accurate financial records
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and present financial data effectively
- Problem-Solving: A proactive problem-solving attitude to address discrepancies and improve processes
- Adaptability: The ability to adapt to changing business needs and a dynamic work environment
What the job involves
- Babylist is looking for a Senior Accountant, Revenue to join our accounting team
- As a Senior Accountant, Revenue, you will play a crucial role in analyzing and recording multi-channel revenue transactions
- You will assist with maintaining accounting schedules related to custom media and advertising sales
- You will also collaborate cross-functionally with the Partnerships and Accounting/Finance teams, ensuring appropriate stakeholders have the information they need in regards to advertising agreements
- You will be responsible for participating in the month end close process, working with internal business partners, and reviewing the balance sheet/P&L and providing commentary
- Financial Stewardship: Your meticulous approach to revenue recognition will directly impact the company's financial health
- Strategic Decision Support: Your revenue analysis and research will serve as a critical resource for strategic decision-making
- Compliance and Auditing: Your commitment to maintaining compliant and accurate revenue records will ensure a smooth auditing process
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Your collaboration with the sales team will foster better communication and alignment within the organization
- Research and document complex revenue recognition matters. Work with Accounting Manager to review new revenue agreements and establish appropriate revenue recognition accounting policy
- Prepare and update supporting schedules, 606 calculations, and record media (and other) revenue journal entries as part of the accounting month-end close process
- Reconcile general ledger balances for media revenue related accounts
- Prepare schedules and respond to inquiries received from auditors as part of the year-end financial statement audit
- Work with Accounting Manager and business partners (sales team) to develop processes and policies for various types of media contract arrangements
- Support process improvements and automation initiatives to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of revenue recognition
- Perform Balance Sheet and P&L flux analysis for media, affiliate and other revenue accounts
- Support accounting team and assist with ad hoc projects on an as needed basis
Our take

The difference it offers is that it allows users to include products from any store in their registries. On top of this, the company’s model also focuses heavily on creating informational content, which allows it to generate ad revenue while building customer loyalty.
Originally scaled with fairly low venture funding, Babylist claims half of new parents in the US now use its services. This, given that the baby products industry is worth close to $90 billion, shows the immense growth of the company as well as speaking to the impact it has made in the space.
Babylist has seen strong funding in the past which fuelled projects such as the launch of virtual showrooms, and facilitated the company's expansion further into the market. The company acquired Expectful, a health and wellness tool, in 2023 with the long-term vision to combine the companies into a larger health and wellness media property, that can help people navigate all parts of parenthood from fertility to diapers.
