Role
Who you are
- 3+ years experience in an administrative role providing support to senior executives
- Experience with G Suite products and applications, including Gmail, calendar, drive and Google Slides
- Demonstrated ability to manage and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent prioritization and time management skills
- Ability to organize and coordinate multiple concurrent projects
- Ability to identify and solve problems in a creative way
- Collaboratively work with all levels of management and staff
- Flexible team player, willing to adapt to changes and unafraid of challenges
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
What the job involves
- Provide tactical administrative support to our Commercial Leadership team, including the Chief Commercial Officer and up to three senior ad leadership team members
- Serve as a key partner for colleagues across our commercial department
- Understanding basic company organization, working relationships and business partner roles and responsibilities is important as this position will work closely with other teams across The Athletic
- Work successfully in a team environment, build effective working relationships inside and outside of the group, while keeping abreast of general business objectives, policies, standards, services and processes
- Represent The Athletic brand, to both internal colleagues and external clients, and proactively approach tasks and requests effectively. This position will report directly to the Head of Ad Marketing
- Manage active meeting calendars, including coordinating with participants, resolving conflicts, and generally manage the Commercial Leadership team’s daily schedules
- Organize department meetings, including scheduling, reminders, agenda development, conference room and/or virtual room set-up, and technology support
- Attend key meetings, tracking and helping drive completion of key deliverables, and following up on outstanding items
- Serve as department administrator managing position changes and maintaining a department vacation calendar
- Prepare drafts of general correspondence, department communications, reports and presentations
- Lead logistics for departmental and team events, social activities, offsite meetings, etc as well as for external events which include, but are not limited to, client entertainment and advertising industry events
- Arrange travel and manage expense report processing
- Answer questions from department staff, assisting in the resolution of general problems and coordinating with other teams (IT, HR, etc.) to support
- Field incoming requests, including to department email accounts, and direct them to appropriate teams, and handle highly confidential information with good judgment and discretion
- Build and maintain a commercial team internal wiki
- Launch and maintain a The Athletic Advertising monthly email newsletter, working with Commercial design and strategy teams on content and Sales team for distribution list and upkeep in partnership with an external eCRM partner
- Perform other responsibilities and special projects as assigned
Our take
The Athletic provides authentic, in-depth coverage written by journalists who know the teams they write about inside out. Its model bucks the trend of traditional sports journalism outfits by asking for a subscription rather than relying on ad-revenue.
Despite initial doubts that users would be willing to pay for sports journalistic content, The Athletic has found significant success and was acquired by the New York Times in 2022. Despite it operating at a loss directly after the takeover, it was clear that the New York Times perceived this as a long-term investment.
In 2025, it was reported that The Athletic was now profitable, which aligns well with its parent's prediction of profitability within 4 years. This has been aided by accelerated customer growth alongside the rising trend of subscription-based sports news.
