Role
Who you are
- Track record in fast-paced environments: Experience as a Senior or Staff Engineer in a high-growth startup or scale-up, with a strong bias toward shipping
- System design at scale: Proven ability to design and build complex systems, platforms, and developer tooling that support engineering teams at scale
- Modern tech expertise: Deep experience with Python, Node.js, and AWS serverless architecture (e.g., Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB)
- Front-end capabilities: Skilled in developing responsive, performant front-ends using modern JavaScript frameworks such as React
- Product-minded mindset: Experience working closely with product and engineering teams to solve developer and operational problems, not just deliver features
- Can deal with ambiguity: Comfortable navigating changing priorities and incomplete information to make strong technical decisions
Desirable
- Exposure to the energy sector or other regulated industries
- Experience building internal platforms, developer tooling, or self-serve infrastructure capabilities
- Familiarity with real-time data processing or agentic/AI-driven systems
- Background in data engineering, analytics, or machine learning, including hands-on experience with modern data tooling such as ClickHouse, dbt, Omni, or time-series data platforms
What the job involves
- We’re looking for a Staff Engineer to accelerate product delivery and enable scale across our developer experience and platform engineering initiatives. You’ll contribute through hands-on coding, drive architectural direction, and raise the technical bar across the team
- In your first 12 months, you’ll lead the development of systems and tooling that redefine how engineering teams build, deploy, and operate software - from internal developer platforms and CI/CD workflows to scalable infrastructure and self-serve tooling
- You’ll help us improve engineering velocity, reliability, and observability while laying the groundwork for rapid, sustainable growth
- Build with impact: Architect and deliver end-to-end systems, from internal developer tooling and platform services to scalable infrastructure components, ensuring they are reliable, performant, and easy to use
- Own the platform: Improve and extend core platforms and developer experience tooling, making it easier for teams to build, test, deploy, and operate quality software
- Drive innovation: Rapidly prototype and iterate on new workflows, automation, and platform capabilities that improve engineering productivity and operational excellence
- Partner cross-functionally: Collaborate with Product Managers, Designers, and other Engineers to scope, design, and deliver high-impact platform and infrastructure solutions
- Raise the bar: Lead by example through code reviews, mentorship, and championing engineering best practices across the team

- Culture-Add Interview with Stakeholders (45 Mins). The final session will be with two cross-functional stakeholders, and will explore how your values align with ours, and is designed to be a genuine two-way conversation, your chance to understand what it’s really like to work at tem

tem is a next-gen energy transactions company that changes the way renewable energy is bought, sold and powered. Rebalancing the playing field away from "Big Energy", tem creates affordable, traceable and smart energy transaction management tools.
The company provides businesses and consumers with access to the same financial benefits as Big Energy companies by distributing its own purchased energy to customers. Once they’re signed up, customers are matched with a suitable generator, and the tem platform helps execute contracts, take payments, and manage invoicing.
This is a truly disruptive concept, and is proving to be a successful one. tem currently processes over £50 million in direct transactions and saves millions for over 1000 UK businesses wanting to switch from traditional utilities tied to the wholesale market. Whilst UK consumers are notoriously hesitant to switch providers, recent soaring energy prices is luring many into giving it a go.
