Role
Who you are
- If you're an experienced Social Media professional (whether from an in-house team within a charity or large organisation, or from a media or PR agency) who has successfully delivered paid campaigns across multiple social media channels, we’d love to have you join our mission
- Experienced Social Media professional from either an in-house team within a charity, non-profit, or large organisation, or a media or PR agency environment
- Has delivered paid social media campaigns across multiple channels (e.g., Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube)
- Strong content creation and copywriting skills, with experience in using Adobe Photoshop and video editing software
- Strong prioritisation and organisational skills with a proven ability to:
- Work independently with minimal supervision
- Operate effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Simultaneously, manage multiple projects
- Delivering to deadlines with strong attention to detail
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a proven ability to tell a story and translate complex concepts into engaging social media content for a diverse range of lay audiences
- Excellent interpersonal skills with experience building credible, collaborative, and engaging stakeholder and community relationships
- A proactive approach to problem-solving with a solutions-driven approach and an ability to think creatively about ways to engage audiences
What the job involves
- Reports to: Rach Mahoney, Social Media Manager
- Contract: 15 month fixed-term contract (July/ early August start)
- As a Social Media Officer, you’ll play an impactful role in delivering engaging content across our social media channels to inspire action, drive supporter engagement, and amplify visibility for Cancer Research UK
- You’ll help bring our social media strategy to life by managing daily activity, engaging in conversations within our online communities, and motivating people to get involved in our events and mission
- This will be a creative, fast-paced, and autonomous role, which will provide you with an opportunity to build relationships with a diverse range of audiences and stakeholders, while gaining exposure to a range of Fundraising and Marketing initiatives, as well as Partnerships and health information campaigns (e.g. , Bowelababe, Stand Up to Cancer, Bobby Moore Fund, Race For Life, Shine, and Winter Run, etc)
- Managing the day-to-day activity on our various social media channels (including paid social media campaigns)
- Creating engaging content with a predominant focus on Fundraising and Marketing initiatives, as well as Partnerships and health information campaigns (e.g., Bowelababe, Stand Up to Cancer, Bobby Moore Fund etc)
- Providing daily community management and moderation of social media communities across Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube for Cancer Research UK events (including Race For Life, Shine, and Winter Run, etc)
- This will involve collaborating with the Community Management Lead and Supporter Services to keep in touch with our communities and gain insights and feedback
- Developing and implementing rolling content calendars for our various social channels
- Creating high-quality social media content (copy, imagery, and video) that will appeal to, and engage, our audiences
- Collaborating with PR teams to turn press, case study, and celebrity stories into social content
- Creating reactive content to drive conversation – this involves developing content ideas quickly to ensure Cancer Research UK is involved in conversations over and above its day-to-day work
- Supporting the Social Media Manager, wider social team and external agencies to plan and execute campaigns
- Researching and managing influencer outreach campaigns
- Using social media monitoring tools and Google Analytics to regularly monitor and report on our social activity and campaign results

The world’s largest independent cancer research charity, Cancer Research UK (CRUK) was founded from a merger between the Cancer Research Campaign and the Cancer Research Fund in 2002. CRC and ICRF had been longstanding pinnacles of the British medical institution, their work dating back to 1902 and 1923 respectively, and the merger signalled a strong step forward for UK medical institutes’ global influence.
A multi-armed charity, CRUK uses both grant-funded researchers and its own employed staff to research the treatments and causes of cancer, whilst its striking advertising and marketing campaigns are responsible for influencing public policy on the causes, prevention, and treatment of the disease. An example of a significant public campaign was Stoptober, which appeared to have triggered a third of a million smokers at the time to try quit tobacco throughout the month of October.
Alongside its pharmaceutical efforts, in 2023 CRUK funded clinical trials for the first-ever proton beam therapy for breast cancer, indicating a focus on technological innovations in the fight against cancer. On this subject, CRUK has also taken part in a billion-pound investment in the Francis Crick Institute, a biomedical research institute that is aiming to make England an international leader in the industry.
