Who you are

Hands-on experience of working with open source data orchestration systems such as Dagster, Prefect, or Airflow
Good understanding of distributed compute engines such as Spark/Databricks
Confidence using Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm in cloud environments
Experience building software for public cloud environments (Azure preferred, AWS/GCP considered)
Knowledge of good data modelling and design patterns; in-depth knowledge of relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL) and familiarity other types of data store (blob, document, graph)
Good experience in using modern, agile development practices like code review, TDD, CI/CD and pairing using tools like Git and GitHub
Experience of operationally managing software components once live, including; observability, logging, metrics, error reporting, debugging and live incident management
Experience of working with sensitive personal data
Experience working in/with cross-functional teams consisting of e.g. engineers, product, UX and non-technical stakeholders
Ability to communicate with stakeholders and audiences outside your own team
Experience working in small, growing organisations with a high degree of ambiguity, where flexibility is valued
Strong understanding of software quality principles and practices
Comfortable in mentoring and coaching less experienced engineers
Comfortable in taking part in - and sometimes facilitating technical discussions

What the job involves

We are hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join our Questionnaire Data squad, a cross-functional squad focused on building high quality data products that can be used to effectively carry out health research and share insights with our participants
Our tech-stack includes Python, Databricks, Dagster, PostgresSQL, Terraform (IaC), running in Azure (Kubernetes and Azure AppService)

Our take

Millions of people spend too much of their life with poor health, with medical professionals only able to treat diseases when symptoms start to present. But what if later-life diseases could be prevented earlier through a better understanding of public health? Our Future Health is a ground-breaking new study, aiming to collect a blood sample and a short questionnaire from 5 million members of the British public.

One of the two major strands of genomic study in the UK (the other is the Newborn Genomes Program which will be running in parallel), Our Future Health is set to become the largest health research program in the world. With funding from government and the private sector (with particular interest from pharmaceutical investors) it will cement Britain's reputation as a world leader in genomics, and is expected to lead to major advances in the fight against obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other causes of poor health.

Aside from looking for volunteers for the study, Our Future Health is also seeking engineering talent to help build the infrastructure that will gather, analyse and protect the research data. It will be exciting to see how this charity develops and what discoveries emerge from its data in the future.
