Role
Who you are
- 7+ years of experience in UX/UI design with 2+ years managing or mentoring other designers
- A strong portfolio of shipped work across mobile and web platforms—TV experience is a big plus
- Experience working in and contributing to design systems, with a strong grasp of interaction and visual design principles
- Strategic thinker with the ability to articulate and execute on a design vision, connecting user needs with business goals
- A sharp eye for detail—you believe every pixel matters and know how small touches create a great product experience
- Comfortable working in a remote environment, communicating clearly and proactively across time zones
- Technically savvy and comfortable collaborating with engineers to bring your designs to life
- Passionate about accessible, inclusive design practices and always advocating for the end user
- Familiarity with design tooling, prototyping, and working with research and data to inform decisions
- Bonus: Experience designing personalized, content-driven, or community-centered user experiences
What the job involves
- As we grow and evolve, we’re looking for a Manager, UX Design to join our fully remote design team and help us shape the future of Plex
- This is a key leadership role reporting to the VP of Product Design
- You’ll balance strategic thinking with hands-on design work, helping elevate our UX/UI craft across web, mobile, and TV platforms
- Lead and mentor a small, talented team of designers—helping them level up their skills in visual design, interaction design, strategic thinking, and collaboration
- Drive the evolution of Plex’s design system and UI standards, ensuring high-quality, accessible, and brand-consistent experiences across platforms
- Influence product design efforts from early discovery to final delivery, establishing a clear design vision that aligns with product and business goals
- Design and ship experiences that feel polished, consistent, and thoughtful—sweating the details while keeping the bigger picture in focus
- Collaborate closely with engineering, product management, and marketing to ensure a cohesive user journey across all surfaces—TV, mobile, and web
- Consult with internal and external teams on mobile design standards, ensuring all Plex experiences maintain quality and consistency regardless of where they originate
- Stay up-to-date on mobile trends, platform guidelines, and emerging interaction patterns—bringing that knowledge back to the team and applying it to our evolving design approach
- Champion user-first thinking, designing contextual, community-driven experiences with personalized insights, recommendations, and guidance
- Help foster a healthy async-first team culture while also leading dedicated design rituals like critiques, reviews, and planning
- Partner with our UX Research team to connect research insights to design work and product direction
Our take
As well as offering its own deep library of movies, series, and live TV channels, Plex has recently stepped up its product by turning into a single interface for all paid subscription services. If a user subscribes to Netflix, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire for example, they can search and access all these in one place.
Given the competition in the subscription streaming services market, as well as the common user pain points such as time waste while searching, this so-called “Discover” feature is seeing the company’s popularity soar.
Plex has been profitable since 2014, five years after the company’s launch, but after the last funding injection led by existing investor Intercap, the aim is now to scale at large. Indeed, it’s this funding which led to the roll out of its all-streaming-in-one interface.
The fact that Plex is the first streaming company to do this serves as quite an advantage, as it may not be long until others follow suit. The rollout hasn’t been without its complaints about user experience however, but if the company can smooth out these issues as it scales, a period of significant growth could be around the corner.
