Role
Who you are
- BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Math, or Physics (MS or PhD preferred for Math and Physics majors)
- 5 years experience in production code software development in a complex, multiple team environment
- Proficient in C++ and Python
Desirable
- Experience in designing, building, and maintaining automotive radars, cameras or other sensors
- Experience in SerDes and sensor drivers
- Proficient in Python
- Experience in self-driving cars
- Ability to travel domestically and internationall
What the job involves
- Report into Sensor organization
- Work in a multidisciplinary team environment including radar, camera, or other sensor architecture design, embedded control, GPU digital signal processing, test, and manufacturing
- Define, implement, and maintain cross-sensor cloud-based manufacturing and test infrastructure in both the California SF bay area and overseas locations
- Define, implement, and maintain radar embedded control needed for manufacturing, calibration, testing, and R&D prototyping
- Ensure that our software is architected for precision and reliability, and implemented using advanced technologies and engineering best practices
- Conduct software testing and validation, including the use of simulation and advanced radar test chambers to ensure that there are no reliability problems in our hardware and software that runs on the road
- Hardware Engineering is a diverse, innovative, and collaborative group of electrical, mechanical, reliability, software and vehicle engineers
- We design, build, and perfect the products which are the eyes and ears of Waymo's autonomous driving technology, and integrate those products into vehicle platforms
Our take
Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company that began as the Google self-driving car project in 2009. After initial development, it secured permits to deploy autonomous ride-hailing services in cities including Phoenix and San Francisco, but has recently hit a major bump in the road with safety concerns that resulted in a recall of over 400 self-driving cars.
With the autonomous driving industry already besieged by setbacks and public distrust, this development does Waymo no favours. That said, as an industry leader there remains the possibility it will see out the storm, but massive attention will need to be given to rebuilding trust with consumers if this is to be the case.
