Role
Who you are
- As a Staff Software Engineer you will work cross-team, be a go-to technical expert, and help architect and tackle our most complex technical challenges
- You have a total of 10+ years of work experience in Software Development, including at least 5 years as a Senior Software Engineer or at least 2 years as a Staff Software Engineer / Sole Technical Lead / Architect
- You have worked on large-scale projects, defined either by QPS, active users, or data volume, and have demonstrated the ability to design, implement, and maintain highly scalable and reliable systems
- You have at least senior technical depth in full-stack development including frontend, web servers, and databases
- You have been a technical lead (not necessarily people lead) for shipping major projects, have worked with multiple complex codebases, and have worked across teams
- You have mentored more junior engineers (not necessarily reports)
- You are highly motivated / passionate, versatile, and looking forward to working in a fast-paced startup environment, with an emphasis on delivering business value
- You have experience owning production services, working in an agile environment, and collaborating with Product Managers, Designers, and business stakeholders
- You have experience working on cross-functional projects
- You have strong knowledge of modern web technologies, system design & architecture, and microservices, and keep up-to-date with them
- You are an excellent communicator, for both technical and non-technical topics
What the job involves
- We are looking to bring on a full-stack Staff Software Engineer for our Super+ vertical
- This vertical consists of 5 full-stack engineering teams, along with Data, Design, and QA to support shipping world-class products
- Play a central role in architecting our services, frontends, databases, and mobile app
- Tackle technical challenges relating to how we unify our products into our Super.com app and ensure a high quality user experience
- Be a go-to full-stack technical expert acting at the intersection of multiple teams helping to mentor other less experienced team members
- Propel the business forward by driving high-impact projects, leveraging other engineers and teams as appropriate in some cases serving as the cross functional context holder ensuring efficient delivery when cross functional work is necessary
- Work across multiple codebases, as you contribute to them, improve them, and share findings and suggestions with other engineers at guild meetings (technical guilds discuss and set engineering standards)
- Help shape the technical roadmap for the engineering organization by contributing to OKR brainstorming sessions
- Create and present cross-team and cross-eng technical presentations focused on improving developer experience, engineering productivity, and processes
- Be largely self-directed in terms of project selection and execution
- Report into the Engineering Director for the vertical
- We use a state of the art architecture powered by Node and Python microservices and React frontend
- We use Postgres for storage, Redis for caching, and Snowflake for our data warehouse
- We use Gitlab for version control and CI/CD, and our infrastructure is hosted on AWS, making use of Kubernetes, RDS, etc
- We invest heavily in monitoring and automated alerting using Datadog
- We use Amplitude, Hotjar, and LogRocket for client-side metrics and experimentation
- We integrate with a multitude of third-parties to support our compliance, risk, and security policies
Our take
Ecommerce scaleup Super (formerly known as Snapcommerce) is looking to revolutionize the eCommerce experience. Instead of shopping around disparate sources for the best consumer product deals, Super wants users to be able to send a message to their account and have the best personalized deals returned, ready to purchase.
The company has tried-and-tested this approach with its flagship and original platform Snaptravel, which delivers travel deals via a text-like interface across Messenger, WhatsApp, and SMS. It proved a hit, already crossing the $1B sales mark with nearly half of sales coming from repeat customers. This is substantial, as any significant overhaul of how people shop requires both efficacy and popularity to catch on - Snaptravel has both, which bodes well for the broader Super brand.
The recent boom in eCommerce has spilt over into a marked increase in mobile commerce, too. With Gen Z more likely to shop using mobile, and this demographic maturing into a substantial consumer demographic, Super, with its capital raise of more than $160 million, is poised to lead a bold and lucrative new wave in online shopping.
