Role
Who you are
- A 4-year technical degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field, or the experience that proves you didn't need one
- 6+ years of hands-on software development experience, with a strong emphasis on individual contribution
- Background or demonstrated interest in investment management, fintech, or financial data
- Proficiency in Python, REST APIs, and SQL, familiarity with Opto broader tech stack (Typescript/React, AWS)
- Strong grasp of tradeoffs in distributed systems, including data modeling, API design, and performance tuning at scale
- Deep understanding of testing and delivery practices (pytest, CI/CD), as well as opinions on what to test and why
- Experience applying AI/LLMs to data extraction, data interrogation, and document generation
- Thrives in ambiguity, executes independently, and communicates with clarity and composure in a fast-paced startup environment

What the job involves
- Software Engineers at Opto are tasked with turning complex business problems into elegant software solutions. We are context-driven, customer-focused builders of tools and systems. We are end-to-end owners of engineering problems and solutions who constantly challenge one another to evolve as builders and collaborators. Oh, and we have fun along the way, because otherwise, what's the point?
- As a contributor to our expanding platform, your goal is to help create the world’s best private markets investing experience
- You’ll be charged with building intuitive, yet deep, user experiences for all phases of the investment process
- We’re operating our tech stack on Typescript/React/Next.js applications, backed by Python FastAPI REST services and AWS Lambda functions, all containerized in AWS
- Our service deployments are completely automated and execute many times daily. This tech stack continues to evolve, driven by our shared principles and optimizing for modularity, scalability, and team-level service ownership
- Own the delivery of high quality software projects, coordinating with teammates and stakeholders to hit mutually agreed upon timelines
- Contribute to all phases of product development across specification, implementation, code review, QA testing, deployment, and operations
- Seek context and rapidly iterate on solutions to eliminate ambiguity and drive projects forward
- Participate actively in engineering recruiting (interviewing, problem specification, role ownership, etc)
- Raise your hand when you need help - don’t hesitate to reach out to stakeholders (product, teammates, managers, etc) to unblock your progress

For investment advisors looking to put together strong portfolios for clients, private investments represent a vast and attractive section of the market. However, these assets remain underused, with advisors having on average only 0-4% of their wealth invested in them, due in part to restricted access and lack of appropriate resources. Opto Investments enables Registered Investment Advisors to “level up” their practices, by providing access and insight into the private investment market.
Traditionally, access to private investments has been restricted to those with large teams of specialists who are able to assess the market and fill out the too-often convoluted paperwork. Opto Investment supplies a platform which combines these processes, allowing RIAs to explore the private market landscape and turn insights into actionable investments. The process is managed from start to finish, incorporating client goals throughout, with the company leading advisors from sourcing and diligence to investor servicing and reporting.
Opto Investments has already partnered with over 80 Registered Investment Advisors, and it has raised huge amounts of funding. With recent new launches and strategic partnerships secured, Opto is ready to transform how advisors approach private investments.
