Who you are
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Economics, Finance, or Mathematics
- 8 to 12 years of finance experience, preferably in investment banking or strategy consulting
- Expert-level Excel skills; proficient in PowerPoint and Google Apps skills
- Strong written and spoken communication skills; ability to connect with team members and convey technical financial information to non-financial professionals
- Assess multiple investment opportunities, prioritize them and successfully “pitch” prioritized project to a executive audience
- Ability to work collaboratively across different functions and diverse personalities
- Desire to work in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment
- Self-motivated and strong work ethic with a desire to make an impact
- MBA, JD or other relevant advanced degree a plus
What the job involves
- The Director of Strategic Finance provides financial modeling and strategic support across all functions, with an emphasis on new business initiatives and strategic development areas
- The scope of this role includes managing the cadenced short-term and long-range planning, performance analysis, investment ROI, and ad hoc strategic support
- This role reports into the SVP, Finance and will partner closely with the CEO, CFO, President and their functional leaders
- They will need to be comfortable working in a high-growth environment and presenting to the executive leadership team
- Put your expert financial modeling abilities to work to develop new business lines and assess strategic growth opportunities
- Act as a strategic thought partner to executives to decipher trends in the luxury resale market
- Collaborate cross-functionally with other senior leaders in Sales, Marketing, Merchandising, Product and Technology, and Operations to become an expert in TRR’s value proposition and points of differentiation
- Lead the financial modeling and investment analysis for new business opportunities
- Create projections and forecasts for the new business initiatives; build the business case, determine resource requirements and articulate the investment thesis; pitch to the executive team and Board of Directors, as appropriate
- Participate in the the annual, quarterly, and monthly budgeting, forecasting and outlook processes
- Build new tools and take on ad hoc finance projects to support the FP&A team as needed

The RealReal is an online marketplace for second-hand luxury goods including high-end fashion, jewellery, watches, and fine art, all verified by in-house experts as part of the company’s robust authentication infrastructure. With a focus inspired by the circular economy, it also helps both buyers and consignors to extend products' lifespan, bringing sustainability to the fashion industry.
The company has sought to boost its activities through strategic moves like a partnership with Gucci, which is focusing on sustainability as it incentivises its customers to buy authenticated secondhand goods via The RealReal. Also, there have been forward-thinking approaches to customer acquisition and retention such as AI pricing and fake finding. Regardless, as a primarily retail-based company, The RealReal was affected by inflation in 2023 and made a 7% cut to its workforce to reduce operational costs in the first quarter. 2024 Q1 also showed the company to report a loss with an optimistic hope for growth in the following quarters.
