Role
Who you are
- 10+ years of relevant work experience developing web applications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or other relevant field
- Proficiency with React and component-based architecture
- Experience with JavaScript or TypeScript
- Ability to lead feature implementation from discovery through deployment
- Ability to improve team capabilities through code reviews and knowledge sharing
- Experience mentoring teammates on Front End best practices
- Professional working proficiency in English, the language of the company
- Experience with state management and data fetching in frontend applications
- Experience working with REST APIs
- Deep understanding of HTML, CSS, and responsive design
Desirable
- Experience with monorepo tooling or large-scale frontend architectures
- Experience with mapping libraries or data visualization tools
- Experience with modern testing frameworks and CI/CD practices and leveraging AI tools to enhance productivity
- Background in geospatial technologies, remote sensing, or the defense and intelligence sector
What the job involves
- The Global Monitoring Service (GMS) App Team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead the development of our application's frontend
- We are looking for an individual who can contribute deep technical expertise and provide mentorship to ensure adherence to frontend best practices
- The GMS App Team is responsible for providing a customized application for Defense & Intelligence customers from around the world
- This application provides daily, near-real time monitoring and analytic insights on customer-defined sites built atop Planet’s satellite data
- Design and implement frontend features
- Develop and maintain frontend applications using React and TypeScript
- Mentor other engineers through code reviews and technical discussions
- Contribute to backend systems and APIs as needed, with a primary focus on frontend ownership
- Drive architectural decisions impacting the frontend, including component design and state management patterns
- Collaborate with product managers and designers to deliver solutions

Planet’s high resolution, high frequency Earth-imaging satellites make daily changes in the earth more visible, allowing the company to provide quick turnaround geo-spatial data to its customers. The company was founded by a group of former NASA employees driven by a desire to make global change more actionable by rendering it more visible.
Planet operates the largest Earth-imaging satellite network available, putting it ahead of any competitors. Its landmass data is easy to access, requiring only a subscription from its members - who range from ecological organizations, to private companies and government bodies. The company is also supporting SES and Telesat on their space relay projects for NASA.
The current focus of Planet seems to be on employing its network towards climate and environmental issues. A partnership with Accenture comes with the goal of developing AI-powered geospatial intelligence tools to support sustainability projects; and the company's acquisition of Salo Sciences will allow it to develop offerings around enabling customers to quantify carbon stocks, monitor forest change, and mitigate climate risks.
