Who you are
- We’re searching for people who understand UX, tone of voice, persuasion and reassurance, but most of all, can make the complex simple and create things that work for humans
- You might come from an agency background or a start up, and have probably made a living from your main trade, but you're open minded and willing to try it all
- We’re looking for someone who knows their way around design for the real world – you’ve explored design and all of its elements. Worked on campaigns, web experiences or maybe events, all from an idea in a sketchbook to launch and beyond
- You can reel off some good numbers, but actually, what you really, really geek out on is how real humans use technology. In, like, their real, actual, messy lives: the ones full of self-interest, love, loss, stress and tedium
- You know the tools and theories of Human Centred Design, but all the talk of process makes you cry inside
- What really matters is the outcome, not how you get there - and you just want to make great stuff. You're looking forward to not working on a user persona
- You're enthusiastic, and that enthusiasm means other people follow your lead and you'll get stuff done
- You're a grafter, but a smart grafter. You put effort where it delivers the most value: you’ll wireframe just enough to communicate what you need to a developer. If your resources are limited, you’ll find a work around
- Finally, you're not a fan of the traditional businesses. You can live without working to backlogs, or writing business cases. You prioritise effectiveness and efficiency above all else. You get stuff done by knowing what's right, and sometimes that's hard
- Proficiency in a variety of graphic design and interactive tools such as Figma, Adobe Illustrator, Indesign, Photoshop (After Effects and Premiere Pro are a plus)
- Knowledge of UX/Ul, Graphic design and illustration, (motion graphics is a plus).Basic knowledge of marketing principles and customer experience
- An understanding of design principles, user experience, and user interface design.A desire to get stuck into any kind design project, you love a challenge
- An ability to pick up work in a fast paced environment with a willingness to learn
- Entrepreneurial instincts with clear bias for action and track record of rolling up your sleeves
- Strong focus on collaboration and communication, leaving ego at the door to get the job done
- An interest in sustainability, green energy and improving people’s lives
- The ability to work efficiently and swiftly without sacrificing the quality of your output
- Adaptability; you’ll have the mindset of a generalist rather than a specialist, with a broad skill set that allows for versatility in various design tasks. You're not above picking up work that's “not in your job description.”
- A deep seated curiosity for how people interact with technology, and creating frictionless, delightful experiences
- A user-centric approach to design, prioritizing the needs and experiences of users while creating functional and visually appealing products
- An obsession with improvement - you’re always analysing user feedback and iterating on designs to improve usability, user-centricity, accessibility, and overall customer satisfaction
- A passion for self progression and are keen to develop your skills, both with guidance and independently
What the job involves
- We’re looking for a creative, human-centered Designer to bring Octopus to life in the UK
- Beyond design, we embody a culture of autonomy, curiosity, and relentless improvement. You're unlikely to receive a curated brief; there are no account managers here
- You'll navigate your own journey, driven by a passion to explore, enhance, and take on transformative projects that no one else dares to tackle
- This doesn't mean you're on your own though, there's a whole team of like-minded people here to support you
- You will work with a wildly talented, diverse and passionate team to deliver campaigns and more projects to market in record time
- You will work with developers to build products and make sure your designs come to life and work effectively in the real world
- You will conduct first-hand research and talk to actual humans to understand their needs, wants and context

Our take
According to Octopus, the energy industry in the UK is ruled by a handful of complacent companies peddling fossil fuels, pricing trickery, and poor customer service. Aiming to disrupt the status quo with sustainable energy, Octopus entered the market in 2016 and they now supply energy to millions of homes in a number of countries. Octopus has made a name for itself in energy circles largely because of its “Kraken” technology platform, which it claims is able to reroute energy from renewable sources around a network far more efficiently than competitors.
Octopus Energy further differentiates itself through its aspiration to make everything as easy as possible for consumers, from the simplicity of their bills and the fact that customers are not locked into a contract so they can leave at any time to offering customer service over email and social media at times that suit customers. They aim to make the eco‐friendly choice the easy choice, so all of their tariffs use 100% green electricity, while not being more expensive than their competitors' non-green tariffs.
They are continually creating innovative new products. For example, Octopus Tracker where prices changes daily to guarantee you get the market rate; Agile where the price changes every half hour to enable you to benefit from cheap electricity when the sun shines, the wind blows, and the networks are under-utilised. One of the current challenges they face is that their products are more complex than their competitors, given they use 1000x more data than traditional energy companies. They're exploring ways to explain to customers exactly how their products work.
