Role
Who you are
- This is a role for someone who loves being close to the hardware, is comfortable picking up new tools quickly, and wants to see the direct impact of their work on real physical systems
- Diploma (e.g. DUT) or degree in electrical engineering, automation, or a related field - or equivalent hands-on experience
- 1+ years of experience (internships/apprenticeships and personal projects all count, however, candidates with more experience are warmly encouraged to apply)
- Some exposure to PLC programming (Beckhoff, Rockwell, Siemens, or Schneider - any is fine; you'll learn Beckhoff on the job)
- Comfort with at least one programming language (e.g. Structured Text, Python, C)
- Understanding of version control (Git) for collaborative code work
- Familiarity with electrical panel design and reading wiring diagrams
- Hands-on experience with sensors, actuators, and basic electronics troubleshooting
- Comfortable using an oscilloscope and basic electronics measurement tools
- We're open to a few different profiles - what matters is curiosity, hands-on instinct, and a genuine interest in automation work. Experience with PLCs is a huge plus
- Exemplary work ethic and self-driven attitude: you get things done fast and to a high standard and you don't drop the ball

What the job involves
- Dioxycle is seeking a hands-on Junior Automation & Electrical Engineer to join our hardware team
- You'll be working directly on the control systems that operate our electrolyzer stacks - programming PLCs, maintaining wiring and instrumentation, and helping us build a scalable deployment architecture as we grow from 40 systems to many more
- You'll have real ownership over a critical part of our systems, at a moment when the team and the fleet are both growing fast
- The problems are hard, the impact is direct, and the work is never boring
- Program and maintain PLC-based control systems (Beckhoff) on our lab and field electrolyzer units. This covers lab-scale test units of small and medium size but also includes onsite industrial-scale pilots (that are so big you need to lift them with a crane)
- Wire, install, and troubleshoot sensors, actuators, and electrical panels
- Work with our team to configure new systems and contribute to how we standardize deployments going forward
- Collaborate with Dioxycle's software engineers to integrate HMI graphics with control logic
- Participate in the retrofitting of legacy systems with new-generation PLCs
- Occasionally interface with existing C-based code on older systems

Our take
Ethylene is an important product used in many manufacturing processes, from PVC pipes to clothing to cars. As the world's most highly produced organic compound, it contributes significantly to carbon emissions. Dioxcycle aims to address this problem with a catalytic process that converts carbon trapped during manufacturing into ethylene using water and electricity. Producers that use ethylene in their manufacturing process can use their own carbon emissions as a supply of the chemical, reducing both their carbon emissions and the emissions involved in producing ethylene through traditional methods.
While there is a bright future in technologies that allow manufacturers to produce materials from their carbon emissions, cost is likely to prove a major challenge for Dioxycle. Regardless of green credentials, producers will be looking for value for money in sourcing materials, and high energy costs are a major expense in Dioxycle's process. However, the company has produced several proofs of concept since the company's founding, each more efficient than the last, and funding will be used in the construction of an industrial prototype showcasing the company’s efficiency.
Going forward, the company hopes to be able to take advantage of environmental tax credits for sustainable technology, providing a green credit to companies using its processes that offset the increased energy use. As climate change approaches a tipping point, Dioxycle is likely to play an important role in reducing industrial emissions in the manufacturing process, as well as providing a major source of a widely used manufacturing material.
