Role
Who you are
- User Experience background with strong design experience covering key UX processes, including:
- User interviews, competitor analysis, persona creation, user journey mapping, running design workshops, design sprints, prototyping, usability testing (Lab and Guerrilla), Smoke tests, A/B test, analysing heat maps, lean UX, accessibility, & responsive design
- Ability to clearly communicate and articulate UX concepts, benefits of user research, your process, and design decisions to peers and stakeholders
- Agile methodologies with experience working within multi-disciplinary teams
- Strong organisational, prioritisation, and planning skills with the ability to work independently and identify where your work has the biggest impact
- Proven ability to build and manage strong stakeholder relationships across the organisation with a collaborative working style
- Previously managed, coached, mentored, and/or led junior members of a capability (either directly or indirectly managed)
- Either immediately available or on one month’s notice or less
What the job involves
- Reports to: Lead User Experience Designer
- Contract: 12 month fixed-term contract
- Without the Design Team, Cancer Research UK wouldn’t have the digital products and services needed for people to interact with the charity and understand our value in fighting cancer. We are looking for a Senior User Experience (UX Designer) to use their UX skills and expertise to support the delivery of work covering a range of products and initiatives within one of our key portfolios: Fundraising & Trading (F&T)
- As a Senior UX Designer, you will lead and support user research and experience design work across several initiatives within the F&T portfolio, supporting junior members of the UX team, and liaising with portfolio leadership to understand UX resourcing needs
- This will involve working on strategically important external and internal facing F&T products and services, partnering with stakeholders across the organisation to design user-focused solutions, and identifying opportunities for UX to add value across upcoming initiatives
- This is an opportunity for you to be part of a cross-discipline team known for delivering exceptional end-to-end work that spans a broad range of user experiences, products, and services
- Your legacy by the end of this contract will be to have contributed to our long-term UX strategy and resolved complex problems for both Cancer Research UK and our users and supporters, ultimately helping to bring forward the day when everybody lives longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer
- If you are an experienced User Experience Designer or Researcher who has either directly or indirectly managed, led, coached, and/ or mentored junior UX Designers, we'd love for you to join our mission
- Supporting the development of medium to long-term UX strategy and driving its delivery
- Identifying opportunities in the UX capability to help develop Cancer Research UK's UX maturity
- Maintaining a working knowledge of directorate and department priorities to inform your own delivery and impact
- Seeking out opportunities to lead and/or contribute to portfolio initiatives
- Applying your UX skills and expertise to support the delivery of work for Cancer Research UK
- Acting as an influential UX specialist within the Technology department and across the organisation
- Maintaining an understanding of other related topics to utilise own skills or expertise for wider directorate or department benefit
- Identifying and seeking resolution of complex problems within the UX capability and exploring new ideas and opportunities
- Engaging and influencing a diverse range of internal stakeholders to deliver user-centred solutions
- Training, coaching, and upskilling team members across Cancer Research UK in the tools and techniques of user-centred design
- Line managing 2-3 direct reports within the portfolio and playing a key role in mentoring, coaching, and supporting more junior UX design team members across the UX team
- Acting as a day-to-day point of contact for UX-related enquiries
- Representing Cancer Research UK’s UX offering both internally and externally
- Building relationships with key staff across the portfolio, department, and directorate to maintain effectiveness in role
- Working with colleagues across the Technology directorate to resource work effectively and according to priority

Our take
The world’s largest independent cancer research charity, Cancer Research UK (CRUK) was founded from a merger between the Cancer Research Campaign and the Cancer Research Fund in 2002. CRC and ICRF had been longstanding pinnacles of the British medical institution, their work dating back to 1902 and 1923 respectively, and the merger signalled a strong step forward for UK medical institutes’ global influence.
A multi-armed charity, CRUK uses both grant-funded researchers and its own employed staff to research the treatments and causes of cancer, whilst its striking advertising and marketing campaigns are responsible for influencing public policy on the causes, prevention, and treatment of the disease. An example of a significant public campaign was Stoptober, which appeared to have triggered a third of a million smokers at the time to try quit tobacco throughout the month of October.
Alongside its pharmaceutical efforts, in 2023 CRUK funded clinical trials for the first-ever proton beam therapy for breast cancer, indicating a focus on technological innovations in the fight against cancer. On this subject, CRUK has also taken part in a billion-pound investment in the Francis Crick Institute, a biomedical research institute that is aiming to make England an international leader in the industry.
