Company mission

At Soil Benchmark, we’re building cutting-edge geospatial software that makes it quicker and easier to create the farm management plans that help restore healthy soils and clean rivers across the UK. Since launching our platform less than two years ago, we've signed up more than 11% of England's farmland and we're only just getting started 🚀. Here’s a quick look at what our platform does: https://t.ly/NmcN7

Our take

Soils contain a wealth of biodiversity and play a key role in the quality of farm produce, animal health and much more. Farmers can use a variety of practices to keep their soils healthy, but the issue many in the agriculture sector face is the lack of understanding and knowledge of their own land and soil health. Soil Benchmark is a data analysis solution offering farmers a platform to analyse soil health and better utilise their data to create soil management plans.

Customers are able to join the platform easily by inputting a few sections of data to start them on their soil health journey. With the inputted data the platform uses a mapping system to detect sensitivities to develop a strategy for its customers

The early-stage company discloses that its founding product has been established but the platform will grow in directions initiated by its customer’s requests, staying true and adaptable to the field its serving. Also contributing toward the bettering of our climate crisis, soil can act as carbon stores and with the release of the new Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) farmers are searching for exactly the kind of support Soil Benchmark is offering. The platform is most definitely joining an affluent sector and it will be exciting to see how it’s product broadens over time as it’s customer base grows

Company values

  • 👩🏼‍🤝‍👨🏿 Diverse: improving the diversity of our team is a key aim for us in hiring for this role. We know that the best way to come up with the best solutions to the problems our customers ask us to fix is to have a team with as broad a range of perspectives as possible. We want to continue to do better on this, and really encourage candidates from diverse and under-represented backgrounds to apply.
  • 🌍 Hybrid and flexible – you’ll get a WeWork Access card giving you entry to any WeWork globally. We meet in Paddington at least once a month - so ideally you will be able to get to London easily. But day-to-day you can work remotely or go into the office - whatever works best for you.
  • ⏰ Work that fits around life – we know that there are other things in life than work, so we have flexible working hours. Work when suits you (within reason) and take holiday when you need to. We are all committed to our mission and trust each other to work hard to achieve our ambitious goals.
  • 📚 We take your development seriously - we want Soil Benchmark to be a great foundation for your future career and therefore block out 2 hours every Thursday for you to learn anything relevant to your professional development (we bought Richard a soldering set 🔧, Grace is learning Welsh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿). We also have monthly check-ins to hear about what you’ve been learning and to chat about your career growth.
  • 🎉 Fun and supportive. Perhaps we’re unusual, but we think a job should be fun! So while we do work hard to build tools that our customers are asking for, we don't take ourselves too seriously. You’ll be working alongside our co-founders in a fun, fast-paced environment with monthly hackathons (with drinks after), multiple away days each year (this summer was in Ireland), and LOTS of silly gifs on Slack.

Leadership

Philosophy graduate. Recovering accountant. Ben and I started Soil Benchmark to try and help farms like the one I grew up on to better manage their soils. I'm also a 2024 Nuffield Scholar.

I studied Ocean Science at Bangor before moving into Soil Science at The James Hutton Institute. I started Soil Benchmark with Tom to make more of an impact on how soils were actually being managed.
