Who you are
- Proven experience in engineering leadership roles, either as a tech lead or engineering manager
- Strong technical expertise in building ETL pipelines and designing APIs
- Ability to build and scale creative solutions to challenging data access and collection problems
- Understanding of managed attribution and operational security best practices
- High ethical standards for handling sensitive data, ensuring adherence to data privacy rules and compliance standards
- Willingness to travel up to 15%
- Excellent communication skills, teamwork abilities, and project ownership
- U.S. Citizenship (required to access U.S.-only data systems)
- Experience in data scraping or a strong desire to learn
What the job involves
- We're looking for a Senior Software Engineering Manager to head our Collection Platform organization, specializing in data collection and processing to support OSINT (open-source intelligence) workflows in the US DoD
- You will be leading 3 engineering teams: News, Social, and Cyber in the Platform Engineering organization
- Vannevar Labs’ core products rely almost exclusively on your team's ability to maintain a scalable collection apparatus, quickly respond to new data requests, and creatively gain access to hard-to-collect sources of publicly available information
- In addition, the teams are growing quickly and your ability to build a team around new initiatives is paramount
- Team Building: Develop and lead a strong cross-functional team focused on data collection and exploitation to power all VL products
- Data Product Development: Design and build scalable, reliable data-intensive applications for collecting and warehousing publicly available information
- Technology Improvement: Identify opportunities for automation and enhancement of our core data collection platform from various online sources
- Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, product engineering teams and mission success, leveraging your communication skills to ensure effective teamwork

The company’s workflow platform Decrypt, uses machine learning and automation to understand, target, and respond to foreign actors in ways not previously possible. The platform is a proven success, driving Vannevar’s growth and attracting a $40M OTA contract with the Department of Defense.
Yielding impressive traction so far, the company is using its latest Series B funding round to invest in new product development. Vannevar Labs is also aiming to win its first multi-year program from Decrypt. Should it be successful, the level of guaranteed sales and revenue would be a turning point in the company’s long-term trajectory.
