Who you are

StreetLight Data is seeking a high caliber Sr Software Engineer to be part of our amazing advanced Services team
BS / MS in Computer Science, Mathematics, or an Engineering discipline from a top university
5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer at a software product company, preferable in an enterprise market
Proficiency in Python, including familiarity with data-focused libraries such as pandas, NumPy, SciPy, and scikit-learn
3+ years of experience developing web-based SaaS applications
Experience with SQL databases (PostGIS or BigQuery would be a plus.)
Transportation industry experience or experience with geospatial programming is a strong plus
Competence and interest in both frontend and backend web development
Product and customer orientation
Good communication skills - both written and verbal Quick learner, and a strong team player

What the job involves

This team member will work on both the frontend and backend of our advanced services products and prototypes that customers use
This position reports to Director of Services Engineering
Automate data processing procedures to enhance efficiency and accuracy in delivering customized analytics
Adapt and scale our core algorithms to handle metrics calculation for broader geographic scopes
Build and maintain APIs to enable access to common analyses
Design, implement, and maintain customer-facing features, including both frontend (React) and backend (Django/Postgres) components, in our Advanced Services offerings
Prototype and iterate on feature concepts in collaboration with a wide range of team members
Engineer high-quality software, including peer design, unit testing, and code reviews
Collaborate with Data Science, Data Engineering, and Software Engineering teams to bring new metrics and techniques into the products

Our take

Ride-hailing services, the micro-mobility industry, and the rise in electric and self-driving vehicles are having a dramatic impact on the complex web of traffic in the U.S. General increases in road travel combined with these new transportation innovations are increasing traffic congestion, and current options to analyze the data behind this traffic for improved navigation efficiency are limited.

StreetLight uses location data from third-party smartphone apps in order to provide a real-time overview of traffic congestion levels. Through using this location data, the company can provide insights into any transportation system including micro-mobility vehicles and foot traffic, ultimately providing information to its customers to help manage and optimize transportation systems.

Several other companies are aiming to tackle shipping fleet efficiency, self-driving car communication, and other granular data points regarding traffic. However, Streetlight has taken a more unified approach through the use of smartphones, to provide a bigger picture of traffic data across every transportation method. The company has been acquired by Jacobs, an international technical professional services firm, providing the chance to increase its business reach on a global scale.
