Role
Who you are
- 12+ years of hands-on experience in DataOps, MLOps, cloud architecture, DevOps, or related fields, with a proven track record of delivering large-scale enterprise data and ML/AI solutions
- 5+ years of experience with CI/CD pipelines, IaC tools, configuration management tools, containerization technologies, and infrastructure automation, with a focus on data and ML/AI workloads
- 7+ years of experience with at least one major cloud platform (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and its suite of products, including data and ML/AI services
- 4+ years of experience with data platforms (Snowflake, Databricks, or similar technologies)
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business, or a related field. (Advanced Degree in Data Analytics, AI, Computer Science - is a plus)
- Proven ability to establish best practices in a DevOps environment and lead cross-functional teams, particularly within data and AI domains
- Strong understanding of data management principles, data governance, and data security best practices
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycles and methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, etc.)
- Experience working collaboratively with third-party vendors as well as data scientists, ML engineers, software engineers, product development, and cloud operations teams
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills with the ability to influence and mentor others
- Problem-solving and troubleshooting in technical environments
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, cross-functional team environment
- This is a critical role that requires deep technical expertise in data and AI technologies, strong leadership skills, and a passion for driving innovation and efficiency in our Data, Analytics and ML/AI initiatives

- The Enterprise Data Services (EDS) organization is a multifaceted and evolving team that is orchestrating Workday’s growth through trusted data excellence, innovation, and architectural thought leadership
- Equipped with an array of skills in data science, engineering, and analytics, this team orchestrates the flow of data across our growing company while ensuring data accessibility, accuracy, and security
- Workday is seeking a Principal DevOps Architect to be a driving force in strengthening our DevOps culture within our Data Platforms team
- You will be a key leader in enhancing automation, observability, and continuous improvement across these critical areas, with a focus on building and scaling robust and efficient Data Platforms
- Define and champion the vision for a modern, scalable, and secure data and AI platform, incorporating cloud-native technologies and data mesh concepts
- Champion effective Platform principles and practices, ensuring automated data pipelines, CI/CD, and robust monitoring for efficient operations
- Design and implement scalable Data and ML/AI platforms to accelerate the development, deployment, and management of these solutions in production
- Establish and implement architectural standards, best practices, and Infrastructure as a Code for data and ML/AI infrastructure, promoting automation and CI/CD
- Lead multi-functional collaboration between data scientists, platform engineers, data engineers, operations, and security teams
- Stay abreast of the latest data and AI technologies, proactively identifying and evaluating new tools and methodologies to improve efficiency and performance
- Partner with engineering, and product development teams to understand their needs and translate them into efficient CI/CD pipelines
- Own the selection, integration, and optimization of DevOps tools and technologies specific to data and ML/AI, including:
- CI/CD platforms (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD,) with integrations for data and ML/AI workflows
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation) for provisioning and managing infrastructure
- Configuration management tools for automating the configuration of data platforms
- Containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) for deploying and scaling data and ML/AI applications
- Establish and implement architectural standards, guidelines, and frameworks specific to data workloads, ensuring consistency and quality across all projects and systems
- Promote a culture of automation, continuous integration, continuous delivery, and continuous deployment (CI/CD) throughout the data platforms
- Stay up-to-date with the latest DevOps trends and technologies relevant to data and ML/AI, proactively proposing and evaluating new tools and methodologies to improve efficiency and performance

The company uses a single database for workforce management and financial management to offer integration and optimize business intelligence across companies. It has added to the packages and tools it offers over the years, providing analytic options that allow companies to combine third-party data with information collected by Workday.
Workday has acquired and paired up with many other companies to keep expanding its offering. In 2021, it purchased the employee feedback platform Peakon in response to the growing need for managers to be able to survey workers and collect satisfaction data without face-to-face meetings. The company has also bought and developed many financial tools and HR management tools.
The company’s goal is to provide end-to-end back office services and while there are other providers, such as UKG Pro and Ceridian HCM, Workday’s broad offering helps them to stand out. Though it faced a tough global market in 2023 and has shed some of its headcount, Workday has seen a 6.5% gain in value in the first quarter of 2024. It is now focusing on growth and developing the AI capabilities of its platform. .
