Role
Who you are
- A degree in System Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Neuroscience, or related technical discipline with the following:
- O BS with 5-10 years of experience working in regulated industry or,
- O MS with 3-8 years of experience working in regulated industry or,
- O PhD with 0-2 years of experience working in regulated industry
Desirable
- Experience performing benchtop testing of medical devices or subsystems, including setup, data collection, troubleshooting, and interpretation of results
- Ability to develop and maintain Python (or other programming language) scripts to support data analysis, testing, and process automation for medical systems in a quality-driven environment
- Familiarity with BCI systems, including neural data acquisition, decoding algorithms, neurostimulation, or brain-signal processing
- Familiarity with embedded systems, firmware/software integration, and/or hardware-software design
- Experience in system-level architecture, requirements development and traceability, and integration of systems which include AI-based algorithms and neural interfaces
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities, including experience writing technical documentation and requirements
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with the ability to lead discussions between engineering, regulatory, clinical, and quality teams
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, quickly learn new concepts, meet deadlines, and perform effectively in a regulated, quality-driven environment

- As a Senior Systems Engineer on our R&D team, you will play a key role in system design, integration, and testing
- We are looking for candidates with strong analytical and problem-solving skills who enjoy working in a collaborative team and are excited to bring their skills to a mission-driven environment
- You will get to shape cutting-edge technology that directly impacts the lives of people living with neurological conditions
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders (e.g., marketing, clinical, regulatory, software, hardware, and quality teams) to capture and refine requirements
- Support integration and testing of complex systems involving hardware, software, and mechanical components, ensuring interoperability and compliance with specifications
- Troubleshoot and resolve integration issues using cross-disciplinary knowledge and root cause analysis
- Manage requirements throughout the development lifecycle, including change control and impact analysis
- Ensure traceability between user needs, system requirements, subsystem requirements, verification, and validation
- Define and maintain the system architecture and interfaces, working closely with subsystem owners
- As our team and goals grow, your responsibilities may adapt to meet changing needs or new opportunities
Our take
Brain-machine interfaces have long been a technological dream, shouldering hope of bringing communication and movement to paralysed people. However, the need to drill into a patient’s skull in order to deliver these interfaces had held back advancements in the field for years.
Synchron, founded in 2016, is the first company to propose a safer delivery method via the jugular vein. Its proposition does not require heavily invasive surgery, and the interfaces may be used in a wide range of paralysis cases. The intended result is the ability to send texts and emails, and access online services such as health appointments and banking, all with the power of thought.
The company’s technology earned FDA approval in 2021, with its work backed by top research institutes in the field. Synchron has hopes that its final showpiece may be whole-brain data transfer, but for now, its focus on giving communication to the millions of paralysis patients in the world represents a market opportunity in the tens of billions
