Food systems are responsible for over 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions. It is thus crucial for this industry to address its environmental impact in order to avoid the consequences of a climate crisis. Foodsteps is a food sustainability start-up that aims to allow food businesses to measure, reduce and communicate their environmental impact.
The company was founded by Anya Doherty while she was researching sustainable food systems at the University of Cambridge. Foodsteps has developed a database that contains the environmental impact of more than 1,000 ingredients. The company helps both brands and food service providers, to calculate and communicate the footprint of menus and products.
The company's long-term goal is to make sustainability an easy choice for food businesses. As part of this strategy, the company expanded its area of expertise in order to not only calculate the footprint of foods and ingredients, but to also offer a cloud-based platform where companies can track product development, monitor reductions in emissions, set targets and print their own environmental labels.
