Ability to work in a remote, async software development environment leveraging GitHub, Jira, Slack, and Zoom
Proficiency in any/all of the following programming languages: Typescript, Python, Go, Terraform, Bash
Experience developing and operating software in an AWS cloud environment
Experience with relational database concepts and operations
5+ years of full-time job experience in a software engineering role
Experience with Terraform, Kubernetes, and infrastructure-as-code concepts

Desirable

Prior experience working with a platform engineering focus in a software engineering organization
Strong opinions on developer experience and local development best practices
Familiarity with front-end web application development and frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue
Familiarity with internal developer platform frameworks such as Backstage, OpsLevel, Cortex, or Battlestar
Fluency with AI platforms such as Claude, ChatGPT, and/or Copilot to accelerate software development
Experience with SaaS and open source observability tools, such as OpenTelemetry, Datadog, Grafana, and Prometheus

What the job involves

Join the Developer Platform Experience team under Platform Engineering as our next Software Engineer (L3)
We are actively recruiting for this role to fill an existing vacancy
This position will help users interact with Twilio’s internal developer platform, manage our software taxonomy and cloud infrastructure inventory, accelerate developer productivity via self-service tools, and drive adoption of engineering best practices throughout the company
In the near term the team is focused on modernization, working to transition away from in-house legacy systems to cloud-native platform solutions
Develop, test, and deploy backend, frontend, and client-side applications for internal use at Twilio
Collaborate with teammates and guest contributors via peer reviews, planning exercises, and pair programming
Mentor junior engineers as necessary
Write tickets, testing plans, and runbooks for the team, as well as internal documentation for users
Support internal users and ensure system uptime by participating in a 24x7 weekly on-call rotation
Continuously improve Twilio’s internal developer platform interfaces, local development tools, and platform onboarding processes
Independently own medium-sized features, authoring specifications and designs for features of moderate complexity

Traditionally, it has been difficult for businesses to establish communications systems in-house. Twilio was founded from frustration with this expensive and cumbersome process, providing easy-to-use APIs to let businesses send and receive telephone and text communications.

From these beginnings, the company has expanded through acquisitions and product development to provide a suite of services around market data and customer engagement. It is now a market leader in this space, and has developed a customer base of more than 150,000 businesses including enterprise brands such as Deliveroo, Duolingo and Toyota.

Although aggressive expansion and lack of maturity in some of its products in the past impacted the company's efficiency, a 2023 restructuring addressed these problems and allowed it to remain competitive. The company has since focussed on profitability, streamlining decision making and R&D to put itself in good stead for future success.
