Role
Who you are
- An ideal candidate would have strong data intuition, excellent communication skills, and the ability to execute fluently in both SQL and Python
- 5+ years of startup experience
- Fluency in SQL and either Python or R
- Experience leading research efforts on product and system opportunities
- Exceptional skills at converting questions into data analysis and insight, with just the right level of complexity
- Quantitative mindset, strong at working with probability distributions, causal inference, cost-benefit analysis
- Experience with a startup environment or the ability to operate effectively when faced with ambiguity
- Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences and topics
- Eagerness to learn new techniques, strong prioritization skills
- Passion for making a difference in the lives of our users
- Preferred: Experience writing production machine learning systems
- Nice to have: Experience with or knowledge of government services, particularly safety net services like SNAP, WIC, TANF, SSI, SSDI, Medicaid, Section 8
What the job involves
- We’re looking for a results-oriented Senior Product Data Scientist to help drive decisions on our core product, including our marketplace, to generate business impact and have a positive impact on our users’ lives
- The role will consist of A/B testing, personalization, business analytics, and deeper research to inform major company decisions
- Contribute to software systems used by millions of low-income Americans
- Drive change through impactful data analysis and investigations
- Maintain reliable data pipelines to ensure trustworthy data
- Work with product teams, starting with the marketplace team, but also potentially including the government benefits team, marketing, and growth
- Effectively communicate with team members during projects, code review, etc
Our take
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits are used by millions of Americans, but the scheme has long been hampered by a lack of innovation or digitization. Propel offers instant access to balances, plus local offers and discounts, and support in finding work. It also provides a free debit card that can be used for everyday shopping, bills, savings, and online transactions.
Formerly known as Food Stamps, SNAP benefits can be a hassle to use, with some recipients still having to make phone calls to gauge their budget. Propel's users can keep track of and manage their government-provided SNAP benefits from its mobile app, enabling low-income Americans to make use of this critical safety net more easily.
The Providers app has been used by upwards of 5 million of a potential roughly 40 million people who use SNAP benefits, showcasing both the current reach of the company and how much space it has in which to grow. With a presence in all 50 states, as well as some territories, Propel is investing in expanding its debit card services, and widening its reach to a growing customer base.
