What the job involves
- The Funding team builds products which allow our users to move money into Stripe. After credit cards, we’re the number one way money moves into Stripe and are responsible for processing billions of dollars around the world;operating mission-critical services
- Our team collaborates across North America and the UK with primary locations in Toronto and London
- As a backend engineer, you’ll design, build and operate APIs, features and services. You’ll work within a team of engineers and collaborate with cross-functional partners to scope new products, support users and ship high quality products
- Scope and lead technical projects, laying the groundwork for our products to iteratively evolve and scale
- Design, build, expand and maintain APIs and services
- Support our users and keep our systems reliable and performant
- Align our technical decisions with Stripe’s broad strategic initiatives, while also advocating for needs specific to emerging new businesses
- Work with engineers across the company to understand when existing infrastructure can be leveraged vs. when building a bespoke solution is prudent
- Develop and execute against both short and long-term roadmaps. Make effective tradeoffs that consider business priorities, user experience, and a sustainable technical foundation
- Produce high level internal and external documentation
- Collaborate, mentor and provide support to other team members

Our take
Stripe, nowadays a FinTech giant, spent the first few years since its founding building up its payments business, which primarily consisted of providing an API to eCommerce businesses so that they could easily integrate a payment option in their apps or websites, where before there was none.
More recently, Stripe has started to accelerate its growth with a significantly larger range of financial services including cash advances and credit cards. They also plan to build incorporation services, fraud protection, and more, diversifying its revenue away from payments and differentiating itself from its competitors.
To further expand its position, the company is extending its services to countries with vast customer potential, including Brazil, Japan and India. It is also partnering with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT - a win-win collaboration that is monetising OpenAI’s flagship products and at the same time enhancing Stripe with GPT-4, as it moves forward with intentions to "build the payments foundation for tomorrow's AI economy."
