Role
Who you are
- Strong Backend Expertise: Several years of hands-on experience building and operating scalable, distributed backend systems, preferably using Kotlin and Spring Boot or Golang, in a microservices architecture. Familiarity with event-driven architectures and gRPC is a plus
- Cloud & Infrastructure: Solid knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS preferred, but others welcome), with experience in Docker and Kubernetes environments
- Testing & Observability: Deep understanding of unit and integration testing, and proven experience in implementing monitoring and observability solutions to ensure system stability and performance
- Database Skills: Strong working knowledge of databases, especially PostgreSQL and MongoDB
- CI/CD & Tooling: Experience with continuous integration systems and modern dependency management practices
- Leadership, Collaboration & Communication: Demonstrated ability to lead by example, mentor team members, and foster a positive, collaborative team culture. Comfortable working cross-functionally with product, design, and engineering teams. You can clearly communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership
- Strategic Thinking: You think beyond code—understanding the bigger picture, aligning engineering goals with business objectives, and contributing meaningfully to product strategy
- Proactive Problem Solver: You take initiative to identify and resolve challenges, constantly seeking improvement and advocating for best practices in backend development
- Passion for Technology: You stay up to date with the latest backend technologies and industry trends and are eager to bring innovative ideas to the team
What the job involves
- We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our cross-functional team, working on the Clue product and the services it interacts with. Join us and help over 10 million monthly active users to learn about their bodies and to better live in sync with their biology. - You will help your cross functional team to build, release and iterate on features in their domain participating in all stages of development from early design, to implementation, to release - having quality & observability as a focus at all times
- Reporting To: Engineering Team Lead
- Collaborate with design, product, and other engineering teams to define, develop, and ship new features
- Encourage efforts to explore, evaluate, and adopt modern Backend tools and technologies
- Propose, document, and implement coding guidelines and best practices to ensure a high-quality codebase
- Mentor, support and guide other engineers, fostering a collaborative and motivating team culture
- Share responsibility for the Backend platform’s stability, performance, and overall quality
- Advocate for a business-oriented approach to feature prioritization and establish efficient cross-team collaboration
- Address Backend-related queries and challenges with responsiveness and expertise
Our take
Clue is a femtech app built to offer a tech-based birth control method by tracking the fertility cycle. The company aims to encourage women and people with cycles to understand their bodies through its user-friendly app that offers in-depth information about their health.
Clue differentiates itself through its use of science to provide users with actionable insights regarding their health. Furthermore, it calculates fertility windows based on global averages instead of ovulation data, which makes its results more accurate. The company continues to collaborate with scientists and universities in order to ensure the product is as accurate as possible.
Clue also continues to focus on raising awareness about the importance of tracking periods and ovulation for health and family planning and, with an increasing amount of research being done in this space, is well-positioned for further growth. The company has not been immune from wider economic effects, and cut its staff early in 2023, though this was followed with a successful fundraise that will enable it to expand its product portfolio, scale its digital family planning offering, and invest in research.
