Role
Who you are
- As a team member, you must be excited to grow with Stream. At our core, we are a startup - you should be able to act quickly, thrive in uncertainty, and love pivoting to new technologies
- 5+ years of experience as a software engineer working with React Native
- Proficiency in English (able to conduct technical and non-technical conversations)
- Experience with one of the following: React Native, React/Angular, Android/ iOS, Flutter and (or similar)
- Professional experience with TypeScript, Node, Expo
- Computer Science fundamentals
- Experience with REST API integrations
- Experience with Testing and CI/CD
- A keen eye for UX detail
Desirable
- Previous experience building software libraries for other developers
- Experience with OpenAPI / gRPC / protobuf
- Good understanding of reactive systems such as RxJS or other state management libraries
- WebRTC experience
- Build applications on top of databases (eg. SQLite for mobile, ORMs, …)
- Experience working in SaaS startups
- Experience producing technical documentation
What the job involves
- You’ll join our React Native efforts around our Video, Chat, and Feeds SDKs
- This will be an opportunity to learn from experienced and talented engineers and work on a product that impacts more than 1 billion end-users
- You will have the opportunity to also collaborate with the other SDK teams (native mobile, Flutter, React), the backend API, Design, and Devrel teams
- Maintain and enhance existing React Native SDKs
- Integrating new features from our roadmap (Chat, Video, Feeds)
- Work across multiple teams to provide technical insight on product and feature development
- Be present in collaborations with backend teams to ensure feature parity across SDKs
- Assist with implementation, GitHub issues, and open-source contributions
- Supporting existing clients and prospects through various channels
- Improving SDK documentation, tutorials, and other technical documentation
- Take care of our low-level JavaScript SDKs that allow our customers to integrate with their framework of choice

- Visibility: Everything you’ll do is public and available on GitHub
- Challenge: You’ll deal with complex technical challenges, optimize for performance and ease of use, quickly learn new technologies, and solve technical problems so others don’t have to
- Technology: You’ll acquire new skills in specific technologies like React Native, WebRTC, Protobuf, Twirp, RxJS, Offline capabilities
- Team: You’ll join a seasoned team, proficient in many technologies, establishing solid foundations for all of our JavaScript products

- On the backend, we build our services on top of Golang, and we run our global Edge Infrastructure in more than 10 regions around the globe to ensure low-latency connections between our 1+ billion end users
Our take
Every day, people all over the world communicate via in-app chats. However, chat and UX tools can take months to build and years to perfect. Stream solves this problem by allowing developers to build chat and activity streams into apps quickly and without hassle.
Having started out building APIs for activity feeds, Stream quickly moved into the lucrative chat market. Its customers now include household names such as Unilever, NBC Sports, and TaskRabbit, and it has seen funding from both big-name firms and startup CEOs - a clear indication of the company's broad appeal.
The company has lately been focussed on further developing its in-house technology, in order to fuel its continued growth in the coming years. It continues to enrich its Activity Feed, Chat SDK and 2022-released AI-based Moderation products, as well as developing Live Video capabilities, which it states clients have been interested in for some time.
