Who you are
- This role requires a seasoned professional who can balance hands-on accounting with strategic oversight
- This is an ideal role for someone who thrives in a fast paced, high-growth environment, can work independently, and is passionate about streamlining accounting processes
- Experience: 6+ years in accounting, with hands-on experience in financial reporting, audit preparation, and general ledger management. Experience in technology or blockchain industries is a plus
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required; CPA or CA certification is a must
- Regulatory Knowledge: Strong understanding of GAAP/IFRS standards and experience with multi-jurisdictional compliance, particularly relevant for US and EU markets
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite) and advanced Excel skills for data analysis and reporting, enabling efficient financial operations
- Attention to Detail & Ownership: A high level of attention to detail, an ownership mindset, and a proactive approach to problem-solving, especially suited for a startup environment
- Communication & Collaboration: Excellent communication skills in English, with the ability to convey complex financial matters clearly. Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams
What the job involves
- We’re looking for a Senior Accountant/Controller to take ownership of our accounting operations and drive excellence in financial reporting and compliance
- You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams, including Finance, Legal, and Operations, to manage complex transactions, for fiat, crypto and token-based transactions, and ensure seamless financial processes across multiple jurisdictions
- You will bring a meticulous, detail-oriented approach to managing month-end close, audit preparation, and internal controls, ensuring that our financial reporting is accurate, timely, and compliant with regulatory standards
- With a focus on integrity, accuracy, and proactive problem-solving, you’ll play a key role in building and enhancing our finance infrastructure as we scale
- This role is full-time, with a strong preference for candidates located in the UK or EU
- Oversee Accounting and Financial Reporting: Lead financial reporting efforts in line with GAAP/IFRS compliance, managing month-end close, account reconciliations, and journal entries. Apply your expertise in multi-currency, multi-jurisdictional transactions to ensure accurate and compliant reporting
- Review and Finalize Journal Entries: Review, and approve journal entries related to revenue, expenses, in fiat and crypto, and token-based activity, maintaining precise and well-documented records
- Token Accounting and RTU Management: Manage accounting for token transactions, including Restricted Token Units (RTU) tracking and preparing for token unlock events, ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory standards
- Audit and Compliance: Coordinate annual audits, implement financial controls, and uphold tax and regulatory compliance across the US, EU, and other regions. Draw on your background in financial reporting and audit coordination to maintain accuracy and integrity
- Systems and Process Optimization: Manage financial systems, identify process improvements, and enhance data management and reporting. Your experience in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite) and advanced Excel skills will drive efficiency
- Financial Planning and Analysis Support: Collaborate with the VP of Finance on budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis, leveraging your ability to communicate complex financial matters clearly and contribute to strategic initiatives
Our take
While the Ethereum network offers users highly rated security, the trade off is that its network volume doesn’t have enough capacity to allow for fast and cheap transactions. Matter Labs is one of a small number of companies that are building scaling protocols through its zero-knowledge proof driven product, zkSync.
It’s not the only company of its kind, with the likes of Arbitrum and Optimism also receiving plenty of publicity and funding. However, Matter Labs zero-knowledge proof approach has been praised for both its transaction speed and security. If it was easy however, many more companies would be doing it, so it appears that Matter Labs has made a significant headstart on the competition.
Over the last couple of years, the startup has secured some major funding from high-profile investors such as Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), and Union Square Ventures. Matter Labs released its recently renamed ZkSync Era - a zero-knowledge, open-source security platform on Ethereum in 2023. Matter Labs is predicting zero-knowledge cryptography to outlive alternative "optimistic" security tech from the likes of Arbitrum.
